Canva launched its Connected App for Google Gemini at Google I/O 2026, completing its expansion across every major AI assistant.
Gemini users can now generate and edit designs, turn AI-generated images into fully editable files, and search their content without leaving the conversation.
Canva GM and Head of Ecosystem Anwar Haneef told DesignRush that the biggest friction in AI-generated creative work has been manually bringing outputs up to brand standards.
"The Connected App connects directly to each user's Brand Kit, so every design generated in Gemini uses the right fonts, colors, and visual style from the first prompt," he added.
The integration started rolling out with limited availability on May 19 and will expand to full availability in the coming weeks.
The Design Layer for Every AI Assistant
The platform is now embedded in Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini.
"Millions of people turn to Gemini for ideation and research, but they miss that brand, context and design that only Canva provides," Haneef shared.
Teams can assign different assistants to distinct strengths while keeping the final creative output collaborative, customizable, and on-brand.

Before these integrations, brands and creative teams had to spend a substantial amount of effort manually reconstructing and standardizing AI outputs before using them.
Now, design infrastructure and brand intelligence travel with the asset regardless of which assistant generated it.
The most significant addition in the Gemini integration is the connection between Google's Nano Banana image model and Magic Layers.

AI-generated images have historically been flat, static files that require re-prompting for minor changes.
Magic Layers analyzes the image structure and divides it into individual, movable elements that may be tweaked, scaled, and published right from the editor.
A New Production Model
For agency and enterprise teams, Haneef said the integration makes cross-platform brand production possible for the first time.
A strategist, a creative team, and an account team can each use a different AI assistant while pulling assets from the same Brand Kit.
"AI-generated creative work is no longer isolated to individual tools or experiments.
It becomes part of a connected, collaborative production pipeline where every asset is immediately editable, on-brand, and ready to scale," Haneef explained.
For brands building AI marketing workflows, the bottleneck is no longer generation speed but brand governance across tools.
Canva AI 2.0, launched in April 2026, already connects to Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, Zoom, and HubSpot.
The Gemini integration adds another surface to that network, expanding what teams can do with AI in digital marketing.

Here are three things brand and agency teams should take from this launch:
- Brand consistency is now infrastructure. Teams should connect Brand Kits to every AI assistant they use so outputs arrive on-brand from the first prompt.
- AI assistants can now specialize. Teams can route tasks to the assistant best suited for each job while keeping design output consistent across all of them.
- Editable AI output changes the brief. Marketers should reassess how much manual standardization work AI now handles automatically.
With tools this powerful, responsible AI use means keeping human review, brand guidelines, and clear approval processes at the center of every workflow.
Our Take: Does Being Everywhere Make Canva Irreplaceable?
Embedding its design engine in every major AI assistant enables Canva to make itself harder to replace than any single-surface tool could be.
We think the more interesting question is what happens when Google, OpenAI, and Adobe close the gap on native design generation.
Google Pics, OpenAI's image generation, and Adobe Firefly are all improving rapidly.
What Canva has right now is a head start and a distribution advantage that its competitors helped build.
Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic gave it a presence inside their own ecosystems before their native design tools are ready to compete.
The question now is whether this head start compounds into a structural advantage or buys Canva time while the competition catches up.
