Netflix is currently testing a significant redesign for its TV app homepage.
Its first major overhaul in 10 years, the update streamlines navigation to make trailers and descriptions more prominent.
The new design swaps out the familiar static tiles for expandable boxes that reveal details when highlighted.
Trailers and previews of selected content will play directly within these boxes, letting users easily view content without having to navigate to the top of the screen.
Additional details, like the synopsis, year of release, episode count, and genre will be shown below the expanded boxes.
According to Patrick Flemming, Netflix’s senior director of product, the goal of the redesign is to minimize users’ eye movements as they scan for information about shows and movies.
"We really wanted members to have an easier time figuring out if a title is right for them," he stated.
Streamlining the User Experience
In addition to these changes, the side menu has also been updated.
In its place is a sleek top menu that includes navigational options for search, home, shows, movies, and My Netflix.
Other options from the side menu including Categories, New & Popular, and My List have been consolidated or moved.
Netflix first rolled out the new homepage design for a small group of subscribers who use smart TVs and other streaming devices.
The new design could be implemented for a wider audience over the coming months, depending on user feedback and the success of the test.
