Discord has just redesigned its app to bring its focus back to gaming.

The update includes revamped group messages, voice chats, video calls, and other features designed to enhance the gaming experience.

Changes will roll out throughout 2024, letting users access messages quickly while improving the reliability of the company’s voice, video, and streaming technologies.

The company will also be extending more of its features to a wider range of devices.

Discord evolved into a general messaging platform during the COVID-19 pandemic to cater more to the community, as people looked for ways to catch up, converse, and spend quality time together online.

The redesign is a return to form for Discord, which originally gained popularity as a gaming-centric app.

"We're going to focus on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing — and we'll help developers of those games bring their creativity to life," Discord CEO Jason Citron in a blog post.

Discord Celebrates Its 9th Birthday

Discord recently turned 9, and it celebrated it with "9 days of giveaways."

Custom prizes were prepared by popular users, which include a Wumpus keyboard rug by @comiccarpets, a Wumpus piñata by @pinatasbychi, a headphone stand by @prettyshittycakes, and a Discord Nacom fight stick by @enzouz.

According to statistics from Discord, it's used by 200 million people each month, with 90% of its user base playing games while on the platform.

Last month, Discord introduced ads into the platform after years of resistance, being more proactive in increasing its revenue.

As of December 2023, the company’s estimated net worth was $15 billion.
