Meta Cuts Prices of Quest Pro and Quest 2 VR Headsets

Meta is lowering the prices of its Quest Pro and Quest 2 VR Headsets.  

From March 5, the Quest Pro will retail for $1000 instead of $1,500 in over a dozen countries, including the United States, while the 256GB version of Meta Quest 2 will be priced at $429 instead of $500. Meanwhile, the 128GB version of Quest 2 will remain priced at $400. 

The announcement was made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who told subscribers of his new Instagram channel that reducing the prices will help “more people get into VR.”  

In a blog post, the company said that by lowering the price of Meta Quest Pro, Meta Reality technology and Infinity Display optical slack would be even more available to businesses worldwide.  

“Our goal has always been to create hardware that’s affordable for as many people as possible to take advantage of all that VR has to offer,” the company said in a blog post. “We’re committed to building a successful VR market for developers, businesses, and creators to thrive in. VR is a powerful social platform and creative technology, and the more people with access to it, the better,” it added. 

The price drop comes after Meta’s “Reality Labs” unit experienced a $13.7 billion loss last year, with a revenue drop of 17% in its fourth quarter. 

Two years ago, the Quest 2 VR was launched with a retail price of $300,come August 2022, while Meta has raised its price to $400 for the 128GB model and $500 for the 256GB. According to the tech giant, the unusual price hike was due to increasing manufacturing and shipping costs.  

As the virtual and augmented reality markets evolve, Meta's actions will likely influence other augmented reality development agencies shaping the landscape for more economical and widely adopted AR-VR technologies.
