DoorDash is no longer relying only on partners to deliver by drone.
The company just earned the Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 air carrier certification.
The clearance allows it to commercially operate its own drone delivery service under the new DoorDash Air program.
Following a rigorous safety and operational review, the certification makes DoorDash just the eighth certified drone operator in the U.S.
"We want drone delivery to work for any merchant, anywhere," Harrison Shih, head of DoorDash Air, said in a statement.
"We're building the full stack to make that possible from the ground infrastructure to the drone itself, and the handoff systems that make it work together seamlessly."
First-party deliveries are planned for fall 2026.
DoorDash Air will eventually integrate directly into its marketplace alongside Dashers, the Dot sidewalk robot, and third-party drone partners.
Ground Infrastructure Decides Whether Drones Work
DoorDash Labs, the company's robotics and autonomy division, developed the program in-house.
The team is designing an aircraft purpose-built for the gaps it sees in local commerce, with the majority of components made in the U.S.
The harder work sits on the ground.
This layer covers real-time inventory reconciliation, routing software, and universal handoff systems for drive-throughs, rooftops, and merchant back doors.
Its Autonomous Delivery Platform matches every order with the fastest method in real time, whether a Dasher, Dot, or a drone.
DoorDash points to more than 10 billion lifetime orders and tens of thousands of completed drone deliveries as the data behind these calls.
Human dashers will keep handling the vast majority of the millions of daily deliveries, including apartment buildings and large orders.
Partnerships with Wing and Flytrex continue while the in-house fleet gets built.
Owning the aircraft and the certificate converts fulfillment speed into a product feature that DoorDash controls outright.
Every mode it adds raises the switching cost for merchants, which is the quiet payoff of vertical product innovation.
Partner Pilots Post 30% Order Growth
Some locations in DoorDash's drone partner pilots saw order volume grow by roughly 30%.
The lift held across the nine weeks after each pilot launched, a sign customers kept ordering once speed improved.
Mid-range trips are where the math gets interesting, with more than 20% of DoorDash orders in 2025 traveling 3 to 5 miles.
These orders took nearly 25% longer than shorter runs, largely because matching a Dasher to a mid-range trip takes more time.
Routing this distance band to drones frees Dashers for the quick, high-density runs they tend to prefer.
