Activision Blizzard has surprised fans everywhere with the return of a legend: "The Replacer," who is perhaps the most iconic marketing character in Call of Duty history.

In a new spot launched last week, the beloved mascot played by Swedish actor Peter Stormare showed his signature stony humor in a set of hilariously badass scenarios.

This is a triumphant comeback for the character, marking his first appearance since the trailer of Black Ops 4 in 2019.

Making its debut with a primetime Sunday Night Football spot on September 29, the ad takes a recurring joke from the long-running series to the next level.

According to Activision CMO Tyler Bahl, the campaign is the beginning of a new chapter for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, aiming to further inject the game into popular culture.

The Replacer has appeared in a total of 6 ads to date, after making his debut 11 years ago in a commercial for Black Ops II.

The latest iteration of the character has proven to be a massive hit, generating upwards of 10 million views on YouTube in just one week.

This massive fan reception underscores the importance of maintaining a consistent and distinct brand voice.

By investing in the branding of a single character, Activision turned a funny one-off video into a fan-favorite series that has stood the test of time.

Can't Stop The Replacer

The new one-minute spot begins with a set of vague shots that tease a familiar well-dressed figure.

It's revealed to be The Replacer, who unlocks a storage container to reveal a sick set of wheels. Proudly announcing his return, he drives off, tires squealing, to do what he does best.

The spot follows his adventures through multiple hilarious scenarios, where he replaces a father at family time, a firefighter, a rideshare driver, and The Pope, with each scene getting progressively more absurd.

The spot ends with him doing a donut in his car to write the number 6, announcing the launch of the latest installment in the Black Ops franchise.

Soon after the trailer dropped, Call of Duty posted a bonus clip to the brand's Instagram page where he replaces Grammy-winning artist The Weeknd in the recording studio.

Black Ops 6 was initially announced in May with a trailer from creative agency 72andSunny.

The highly-anticipated game was further teased in June when Activision unveiled a more comprehensive gameplay trailer at a Microsoft Xbox event.
