Nintendo’s Switch 2 Rollout Takeaways:
- The Nintendo Switch 2 launched globally today, with major U.S. retailers like Walmart, Target, GameStop, and Best Buy hosting midnight openings.
- Japan received 2.2 million pre-order lottery applications, reflecting unprecedented demand. Currys (UK) cited its "biggest gaming pre-order ever."
- The company is targeting 15 million Switch 2 units sold in the fiscal year ending March 2026.
Crowds camped out, countdowns hit zero, and just like that, Nintendo lit up launch day like a blockbuster premiere.
The company kicked off a major new chapter in gaming today, June 5, with the global release of its long-anticipated Switch 2.
Midnight launch events in cities like San Francisco and New York drew enthusiastic fans, many of whom waited for hours to get their hands on the new system.

The console represents the company’s first all-new platform in eight years.
It arrives alongside Mario Kart World, the first new console entry in the franchise in over a decade.
In the U.S., retailers including Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart opened early to accommodate the rush.
Others, such as Staples and Costco, offered limited stock online and in select locations.

There were initial concerns over supply chain constraints and a brief delay in pre-orders due to tariff evaluations.
Despite this, Nintendo appears to have managed its distribution more effectively than with past hardware launches.
Fans who missed out during April’s fast-selling pre-orders had another shot in-store, though many locations sold out before noon.

Japan also saw massive interest, with over 2.2 million applicants in a lottery system required just to qualify for a chance to buy the console.
Some local electronics chains hosted separate lotteries to accommodate demand.
In the U.K., the Switch 2 became Currys’ largest gaming pre-order to date, even as some orders were later canceled due to stock shortages.
Meanwhile, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser personally handed the first unit to a fan at the flagship New York store.
This event highlights the importance of the console to the company’s global strategy.

At $449.99, the base model is significantly more expensive than its predecessor. A bundle that includes Mario Kart World retails for $499.99.
The base price is a lot higher than the original Switch's $299.99, but it's around the same amount as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
The Nintendo Switch 2's long-term success remains uncertain, with its high price as a potential barrier after initial enthusiasm fades.
However, with over 152 million units of the original Switch sold worldwide, Nintendo has a substantial installed base that could support the new console’s growth.
New Console, Familiar Formula
The Nintendo Switch 2 maintains the hybrid format that defined the original, allowing for handheld and TV-connected play.
But with nearly every technical aspect improved, including:
- A sharper 7.9-inch 1080p display
- A more powerful Nvidia processor
- Bigger 256 GB of internal storage
- Enhanced, magnetic snap-on Joy-Con 2 controllers
A new online feature called GameChat lets up to 12 users talk during gameplay.
Those with a USB-C camera can access video chat and in-game facial expression sharing.
Select legacy Switch titles now benefit from upgraded visuals or additional features through free system updates.
Mario Kart World pushes the franchise forward with larger race rosters, interconnected courses, and multiple new modes, including Free Roam and Knockout Tour.
With support for up to 24 players online, it’s the most expansive Mario Kart experience yet.
The console’s launch lineup includes over 20 games, ranging from indie titles to major third-party releases like Street Fighter 6 and Fortnite.
Classic Nintendo series are also represented with upgraded editions of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
It also boasts access to GameCube titles like F-Zero GX for subscribers.
Early sales indicate robust demand, with U.S. retailers selling out pre-orders within hours.
Nintendo is targeting 15 million units in the first fiscal year, similar to the original Switch’s first-year sales of 14-15 million units.
Globally, the original Switch had sold over 152 million units by March 2025, making it one of the best-selling consoles ever, including about 46.6 million in the U.S.

Meanwhile, PlayStation 5 has sold 72.3 million units since its 2020 launch.
The Xbox Series X|S trails at 32.8 million, maybe due to a higher starting price.
If Nintendo maintains early demand and delivers strong exclusives, it could carve out a dominant position in hybrid gaming that neither rival currently occupies.
And with a steady stream of new games planned throughout 2025, including Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it's poised for a strong start.
Our Take: Is This Nintendo’s Smartest Launch Yet?
From where I’m standing, the Switch 2 rollout shows Nintendo understands how to execute a product launch with precision.
The midnight events weren’t just retail spectacles; they built community and excitement in a way digital drops can’t.
As for experiential marketing, this was Nintendo leaning into what it does best: creating memorable, in-person engagement.

Launching with a major title like Mario Kart World also gave fans a reason to invest on day one, even at a higher price.
And the return of physical queues in a digital-first market?
That’s not just nostalgia. That’s intent.
Nintendo knows exactly who its audience is, and this time, it (together with retailers) delivered.
The gaming company also effectively used nostalgia to hype up the Switch 2 launch, with Paul Rudd returning to reprise his 1991 role in a Super NES commercial.
