X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk just announced that video and audio calls are coming to the platform in a move that takes it farther from its text-based roots and closer to what Musk calls the "everything app."

According to the multibillionaire, the new features will work on iOS, Android, PC, and Mac devices and serve as an "effective global address book." Additionally, video and audio calls won't require the user's phone number.

While it remains unknown when the new features will become available, users can expect them in the following weeks, as had been the pattern with Musk's previous announcements.

The latest app developments come after Musk confirmed last week the removal of headlines from news articles posted in the app to reduce clickbait, decrease the height of posts, and "greatly improve the esthetics."

Update on Community Notes

Community Notes, X's fact-checking tool run by accredited users, also announced that Notes will now automatically show multiple posts containing the same image to indicate whether it is AI-generated or edited.

"It's common for these notes to match on dozens, hundreds, and sometimes thousands of posts," the post said.

The platform tested Community Notes for images and videos in May to address misleading, AI-generated, and manipulative content.
