Tower defense game The Battle Cats celebrated its 10th anniversary with a gamewide event and a new campaign, developed in collaboration with creative agency R/GA.
The joint venture between PONOS and R/GA, dubbed "Mission Impawsible," revealed a surprising double agent and the true mastermind behind the chaos, marking the anniversary with an exciting twist that deepens the playful storyline.
Throughout September and October, players became Cat Intelligence Agents to investigate the mystery by digging clues across the game and social media.
Their mission — uncover the main perpetrator hiding among 10 suspicious cats for a shot at valuable prizes.

In a statement, PONOS Managing Director Seiichiro Sano emphasized the unique spirit of the campaign, noting how it perfectly captures the essence of the game.
"Spy Cat brings a new layer of excitement, and it's been incredible to see gamers fully engage with the mystery. The positive response shows just how much they love diving into this global spy adventure," he concluded.
R/GA Global Head of Creative Excellence Ari Halper chimed in, pointing out the campaign's focus on pushing creative boundaries and attracting new audiences by drawing on the motifs of espionage and thriller firms.
The campaign — which included social media, paid media, and an influencer component — successfully attracted over 2 million new and 1.1 million returning users, marking a significant milestone for the mobile gaming mainstay.
With a wide roster of past collaborations with major properties like Rurouni Kenshin and Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Battle Cats has established a significant presence in pop culture over its 10-year run.
This latest campaign speaks to the strength of the brand's marketing strategy, which has taken it to great heights.
A Cat Caper
A series of short videos on the game's YouTube outlined the details of the campaign.
"Your Mission Briefing" is presented with an old-school slide projector theme, setting the tone for a top-secret briefing, as players are given a rundown on how to search for clues.
The spot opens with “Look what the cat dragged in! Ten potential suspects, one is the saboteur,” encouraging players to make their accusations.
Participants were eligible to win five rare tickets for a correct guess or three for naming an innocent cat, which can be used to unlock the new Super Uber special character during the 10th anniversary "Best of the Best" festival.
Things get weirder as the series progresses, with one video featuring a cat broadcaster in a pirate hat that gives players the latest updates.
Another video gives fans a more in-depth look into the lineup of 10 potential suspects, which includes Mohawk Cat, Fish Cat, Evil Cat, and other wacky feline characters.
Eventually, the agents were able to put a stop to the madness at the campaign's conclusion.
In a final video, the culprit was revealed to be none other than the Battle Cats' sworn enemy, Doge, who had been disguised as one of the cat suspects the entire time.
Clash Royale, another popular mobile game, recently launched a spooky campaign to ring in the holiday season.
