To celebrate the start of the Halloween season, Supercell's hit game Clash Royale challenges you to lose — if you dare — in a spooky spot centered on classic horror tropes.
Made together with agency DAVID New York and directed by Kelsey Taylor of Eleonor, the short film harps on the idea of haunted technology to bring on the scares.
"The Royale Curse" signifies the rolling out of the new season, with Halloween-themed updates and in-game events sure to get gamers excited for the eeriest time of the year.
DAVID New York CCO André Toledo shares his thoughts behind the campaign's concept, saying that a cursed item is a classic horror-film trope.
"So, we thought, what if the cursed item was our iconic game, Clash Royale? Our partners at Supercell saw the entertainment potential in this and encouraged us to commit to the horror genre and deliver the chills and thrills to their millions of fans this Halloween season. We are very excited to ask gamers to lose... if they dare," Toledo explained.
The campaign officially launched Monday, marking another feat for the brand and agency's ongoing partnership.
With inventive spots and perfectly-timed promotions, Supercell's consistently bold brand marketing strategy keeps its active fanbase both engaged and excited.
'Lose If You Dare'
The new Clash Royale commercial kickstarts with a group of friends in a living room.
To set the mood for the night, one of them shares the tale of Clash Royale, saying that if you lose in the game, you die the same way in real life.
However, no one takes the guy seriously, and everyone bursts into laughter.
To prove him wrong, they all start to play Clash Royale.

Things start to take a turn for the worse when one of them loses their last tower.
"Come on hog rider, come get me!" the player says out loud, taunting the in-game character. A room decor of a hog's head then comes crashing onto the man's head, knocking him out.
The group of friends goes into a panic and starts to take their games a little more seriously — to no avail.
The storyteller watches in horror as his friends lose their lives one by one: a girl gets poisoned by her drink, another gets shot by arrows, and the last one gets burned to ashes.
Luckily, the last guy standing (or sitting down) wins his game, closing the spot.
Recently, DAVID New York and Clash Royale teamed up with Eddie Hall to challenge people to play the game with a 50-pound phone case.
