Apple ended a decade of foldable iPhone rumors on Wednesday.

But buyers have to wait six more weeks to be able to hold one.

CEO John Ternus unveiled iPhone Duo, the brand's first foldable flagship, at the Surprise and Shine event at Apple Park on September 9.

It comes with a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display, and a starting price of $1,999.

The amount is $1,218 above what Americans told CNET last month they would pay for a foldable iPhone.

Pre-orders open on October 16, with the phone reaching customers on October 23.

This gap gives Samsung an unusual opening.

Its Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been on sale since August 7 at $1,899, with the Fold 8 Ultra at $2,099.

Samsung spent Apple's event posting jokes about the Duo while pushing its #ItsTimeToSwitch messaging.

The rival brand was not the only brand watching closely.

Duolingo turned Apple's choice of the name Duo into a running joke, and the language app collected the day's most visible free advertising.

Apple spent years arriving late to foldables.

Now its first device has to survive six weeks of anticipation, comparison, and roasting before buyers can decide whether it was worth the wait.

Two Batteries for 24 Hours of Mixed Use

Apple designed the Duo to open into a larger workspace that still runs like an iPhone.

The device opens to a 7.6-inch inner display, which is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display.

Closed, the 5.4-inch outer screen provides 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro's screen area.

Both displays use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to remain consistent as the phone opens and closes.

Apple also added a nano-texture finish to the product, designed to reduce glare and make the fold less visible.

Ternus, who replaced Tim Cook as CEO earlier this month, called the Duo "the most transformational change to iPhone since the original."

"With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone," he added.

The A20 Pro chip powers the device, paired with a custom vapor chamber and two batteries that operate as one system.

Apple says the Duo can provide up to 24 hours of usage when both displays are used equally.

The camera system also gets foldable-specific features. Users can:

  • Preview rear-camera selfies on the outer display
  • Use the phone as its own stand
  • Use Smart Take to capture a photo when ready

Apple also tailored iOS 27 to the hardware.

Split View allows two apps to run side by side, while the user interface adjusts as the phone folds or opens.

The product gives Apple a new form factor, but it still has to prove that these features justify $1,999 and six more weeks of waiting.

Duolingo Got Free Advertising

Apple gave Duolingo an easy joke when it named its first foldable the iPhone Duo.

Duolingo posted on X that Apple "named a phone after me and made it bend over."

It followed with a post asking what the phone is called, drawing out the exchange over the name and the device.

The app then turned it into a price comparison, pointing out that Duo on the iPhone is free while iPhone Duo costs $1,999.

Samsung joined the exchange, tagging Duolingo and joking that Apple had copied it, too.

Duolingo turned Samsung down, calling it an ugly stranger claiming to be its twin.

The post drew 8.8 million views, 152,000 likes, and 14,000 reposts on a launch day Apple paid to own.

The exchange gave Duolingo a starring role in Apple's product story on the strength of a mascot name alone.

It had a mascot named Duo before Apple named its foldable Duo, and that ownership is what separated it from every account posting jokes for reach.

The naming collision handed it an unusually efficient piece of social and SEO content.

It shows how a rival's product launch can create real brand awareness for companies that find a credible reason to join before the conversation ends.

Americans Priced a Foldable iPhone at $781

The $1,999 iPhone Duo enters a foldable market where premium pricing is already common.

Counterpoint Research expects the global average wholesale price of foldables to rise 18% in 2026.

A CNET survey conducted by YouGov from August 13 to 17 found that 75% of 2,605 U.S. adults had no interest in a foldable Apple device.

Respondents put the price they would pay at $781, less than 40% of Apple's starting price.

A 2024 YouGov survey found that 59% of U.S. smartphone owners are open to a foldable for their next phone.

But the appetite exists at a price no manufacturer is charging.

The data points to three useful lessons for brands.

  • Premium pricing needs a visible reason. Brands should connect higher prices to specific benefits to make the added cost easier to evaluate.
  • Interest does not guarantee purchase. Companies should address durability, use, and price together to convert category curiosity into demand.
  • New categories need accessible entry points. Brands should offer financing, trade-ins, or lower-priced models to expand adoption.

Apple's pricing gives the foldable category a premium benchmark, but U.S. consumers will decide whether the category can support it.

Our Take: Can Samsung Convert Apple's Wait?

Samsung has been selling a 7.6-inch passport-shaped foldable since August 7 at $1,899.

We think that it can convert a slice of this wait, mostly from people already shopping for Android.

Six weeks between announcement and delivery let Samsung put a competing device in someone's hand while the iPhone Duo exists only in keynote footage.

Apple's own history argues against panic, since its Watch and AirPods both arrived late and took their categories anyway.

The number worth watching is $781, the average price that U.S. buyers told CNET they would pay for a foldable iPhone.

Samsung can't reach these buyers at $1,899 either.

But Apple loyalists will pre-order at $1,999 without blinking, which makes the launch quarter look healthier than the category is.

As iPhone Dou enters the foldable market, product positioning will matter as much as the hardware.
