WPP, the world's largest advertising group, and Google Cloud have formed a partnership to redefine marketing through the use of generative AI.

The collaboration was announced at the keynote stage on the first day of this year’s Google Cloud Next held from April 9 to 11 in Las Vegas.

The partnership integrates models of Google Cloud's GenAI platform Gemini with WPP's AI-powered marketing operating system, WPP Open, enabling the creation of “brand- and product-specific content.”

“Our integration of Gemini 1.5 Pro into WPP Open has significantly accelerated our gen AI innovation and enables us to do things we could only dream of a few months ago,” WPP CTO Stephan Pretorius said in a press release.

WPP touts itself as “a creative transformation company,” owning numerous companies like Ogilvy, VML, Mindshare, and MediaCom.

Some of its big-name clients include Coca-Cola, Volkswagen, Ford, Victoria’s Secret, and HSBC.

Integrating Generative AI in Marketing Campaigns

This initiative is part of WPP’s $314 million annual tech investment.

Five months earlier, WPP launched its first creative technology apprenticeship with Google Cloud.

We see now that WPP has been preparing for a long time for its official partnership with Google Cloud and its creative teams' use of AI.

According to WPP, the initial phase of the partnership will focus on developing four use cases: enhanced creativity with WPP Open Creative Studio, smarter content optimization, AI narration, and hyper-realistic product representation.

WPP Open Creative Studio automates repetitive tasks, allowing marketers to focus on the more strategic aspects of their campaigns.

This means that WPP will start to use Google's Gemini 1.5 Pro in various tasks, including:

  • Writing headlines
  • Creating images from a sketch
  • Generating video description and narration for real-time streaming

“AI has the potential to unlock new levels of effectiveness for marketers, whether it is optimizing campaigns, automating repetitive tasks like brand descriptions, or sparking entirely new ideas,” Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian explained.
