About 41,000 cyclists across the globe are killed while cycling to school, work, a shopping centre, or home each year.
In the U.S alone, cyclist fatalities have surged by 42.7% since 2010 — with 82% of deaths occurring in busy urban areas.
To combat these concerning trends, Infinum — a leader in digital innovation — built a companion app for Alps Alpine Europe’s AI-powered bike camera.
The Ride Safety System streams live rear-view footage to a handlebar-mounted smartphone, using AI to detect and alert cyclists to potential dangers in real time.
This Internet of Things (IoT) solution is the first of its kind, actively identifying potential dangers and informing riders of what’s happening behind them.
It also won the prestigious Eurobike Award 2023 at the largest bike event in Europe.

Designing a Seamless Ride Safety System for Cyclists
The manufacturer approached Infinum to design and develop a companion app for their advanced bicycle camera, which features:
- Virtual rear-view mirror
The camera transmits data to the app in real time, ensuring no lag and delivering a smooth, real-time rear view for the rider. - AI-powered danger detection
A machine learning algorithm identifies potential hazards on the road and alerts the rider with visual warnings. - Smart rear LED light
The system includes a tail light and an automatic brake light, improving visibility and signaling when the bike is slowing down or stopping. - Automatic accident capture
In the event of an accident, the system automatically records the crash and stores footage, including the moments leading up to it.
Furthermore, the simple onboarding process was informed through user testing. This included a guide through the camera-app pairing process complemented by multiple education videos.

Users can connect the camera securely via a QR code, which also prevents potential hacker attacks that typically occur during over-the-air (OTA) transfers of credentials.
Željko Plesac, Partnership Director at Infinum, notes how the Ride Safety System is a perfect example of how the immense potential of AI and IoT can be leveraged to improve experiences.
“By delivering tangible benefits to the end users, such a product not only drives its brand forward but also positions it as a leader in innovation.”.

Infinum’s collaboration with Alps Alpine Europe to develop the Ride Safety System represents a major step forward in cycling safety.
Similarly, their work with Versuni to integrate Philips devices into a unified smart hub highlights their focus on using cutting-edge technology to improve user experiences and drive innovation.
