Hyundai gave a 28-year-old nonprofit the national ad slot it usually saves for its car launches.

"The Mark of a Warrior" debuted on September 9 during NBC's NFL season opener between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

INNOCEAN USA developed the campaign, while Canvas handled media buys.

It pairs a cinematic hero film narrated by Scarlett Johansson with social, streaming, sports, dealer, and community activations.

The Strava challenge attached to the campaign pushed Hyundai to double its donation to $2 million within days.

The automaker is also working with Brave Gowns to distribute more than 6,000 armor-inspired Warrior Gowns through 2026.

Hyundai Hope on Wheels has contributed more than $300 million to pediatric cancer research since 1998, supporting more than 1,600 grants.

"'The Mark of a Warrior' is inspired by the children and families we've met through Hyundai Hope on Wheels over the past 28 years.

These children are true warriors, and this campaign gives their strength a national platform," Hyundai Motor America CMO Sean Gilpin told DesignRush.

"By reimagining our iconic handprint, we're using the power of storytelling to inspire action, shine a light on their stories, and rally communities in the fight against childhood cancer.

That's what 'Progress for Humanity' looks like in action," he added.

The PR strategy gives a long-running CSR commitment a recognizable identity and multiple ways for audiences to participate.

It puts an established cause on the same national stage as Hyundai's consumer brand.

Hyundai Gives Its Handprint a New Fighting Role

The creative system starts with a brand asset that Hyundai Hope on Wheels has used for decades.

"The Mark of a Warrior" recasts the nonprofit's handprint as a symbol of courage, resilience, and solidarity.

This idea anchors the gladiator-themed film "Little Warrior."

Award-winning filmmaker Matthijs van Heijningen directed the spot through MJZ, with Alwin Küchler serving as director of photography.

It opens to an ancient Roman amphitheater filled with spectators and then pans to a young warrior in full armor.

A monster breaks through the gates to face the child. She hesitates, drops her spear, and looks at her blue-painted hand.

She steadies herself and strikes the monster with her bare hand, sending it across the arena to a cheering crowd.

The little warrior then presses the blue paint onto her face and rings a victory bell.

The bell mirrors the one children ring in hospitals when cancer treatment ends.

Johansson narrates the closing of the film:

"Every 36 minutes, another battle against childhood cancer begins. Every Hyundai sold helps bring these warriors home. Join us."

The "Black Widow" actress also becomes Hyundai's new brand voice.

Her role gives the campaign a recognizable vocal identity that can extend into future Hyundai advertising.

"Hyundai's commitment to people and purpose is what made being a part of this partnership so compelling," Johansson shared in a press release.

"As a voice of the brand, I'm excited to help tell stories that reflect those values."

The visual system also extends into more tangible experiences.

The handprint gives Hyundai a repeatable asset that can connect advertising, social content, hospital experiences, and owner participation.

Hyundai, Strava Miles for the Warriors Challenge Adds $2M

Hyundai is giving audiences a measurable role in The Mark of a Warrior through its partnership with Strava.

The Miles for the Warriors Challenge launched September 2 and asks participants to run, walk, wheel, bike, hike, or swim.

The initial goal was 400,000 collective miles, tied to the estimated number of children diagnosed with cancer globally each year.

Participants reached the target within 24 hours, triggering a $1 million donation from Hyundai.

Hyundai then raised the target to 800,000 miles and increased the potential donation to $2 million.

Participants passed the second target two days later.

The challenge has since reached about 100,000 participants and more than 3.3 million logged miles.

Strava has more than 200 million users across 185 countries.

This gives brands access to a large audience already accustomed to recording activity and joining challenges.

Strava reached 1 million clubs in 2025, with new cones nearly quadrupling over the year.

Gen Z members were 39% more likely than Gen X to use fitness to meet people who share their interests.

Hyundai reached that audience through a format they already treat as social, which is why the miles piled up faster than the company planned for.

The campaign's participation model gives the carmaker a way to measure action and a donation structure with tangible consequences.

The strongest participation campaigns give audiences a concrete action, a visible goal, and a reason to keep going.

  • Participation creates measurable engagement. Brands should give audiences simple actions to make involvement easier to track.
  • Community can make individual actions feel collective. Marketers should connect campaigns to shared goals to encourage repeat participation.
  • Visible progress can extend campaign life. Teams should show milestones as they happen to give audiences reasons to return.

Hyundai and Strava's challenge suggests cause marketing can create stronger engagement when audiences can see their actions accumulate.

Our Take: Can Hyundai Keep the Cause Culturally Relevant?

Hyundai created several entry points around the same cause.

Sports provide live audiences, while social media gives supporters a way to display the handprint.

Dealerships bring the campaign into local communities, and the Strava challenge turns brand awareness into activity.

The campaign also has a deep roster of entertainment and sports partners helping carry the idea across these environments.

Johansson, the Jonas Brothers, Conan O'Brien, Jordan Chiles, Zara Larsson, Kristin Davis, NBC, Amazon, and iHeartRadio all add reach.

But the handprint needs to remain recognizable across every appearance.

We should judge the campaign's longevity by whether people remember Hyundai Hope on Wheels after the media cycle ends.

A recurring visual asset, ongoing community events, and measurable participation give Hyundai several mechanisms to keep the cause active.

Hyundai did the same in February, skipping a Super Bowl LX ad for Epic Picks on Instagram, where fan predictions unlocked $1 million.
