High-Impact Client Relationship Strategies: Key Findings
Sixty-five percent of U.S. consumers prefer to buy from brands that personalize their experience across touchpoints, including emails, websites, and promotions, according to Digital Silk.
In a world where personalized experiences drive customer loyalty, brands that get it right in their design and messaging stand out.
For Paul Woods, founder of Alice, a design studio known for blending technology and storytelling, this philosophy extends beyond customer-facing work.
It shapes how he collaborates with clients at every stage.
With his company’s track record working with giants like Google, Red Bull, and Volkswagen, Woods has perfected the art of personalizing client relationships, ensuring collaboration and trust at every step of the process.
In this interview with DesignRush, Woods reveals how Alice’s approach to design and client partnerships fosters long-term success and drives impactful, transformative projects.
Who is Paul Woods?
Woods is an award-winning designer and the founder of Alice, a design and technology company. He has led projects for major clients like Google, Red Bull, and Volkswagen, and his work has been featured in publications such as Fast Company and AdWeek. With a passion for automotive design and technology, Paul holds several patents in the field.
1. Foster Collaboration to Unlock Transformative Results
For Woods, collaboration is the cornerstone of any successful client relationship.
"The most important point is that the potential client is open to collaboration," Woods says.
Unlike traditional agencies, Alice doesn’t operate under the assumption that they know the client’s business better than they do.
Instead, the company emphasizes working closely with in-house teams to unlock creative potential.
"We don’t pretend to know our clients’ businesses better than they do," Woods says.
Our approach is to work closely with their in-house teams, sometimes even on-site, to unlock something special that was probably already there, but just needed a fresh perspective or process to unlock."

This focus on collaboration ensures that both Alice and the client are aligned, creating an environment conducive to innovation.
However, Woods also notes that collaboration requires significant investment from both sides:
"If a client isn’t open to a collaborative process where they need to also invest significant time on their end, they probably aren’t ready for a large, transformative project."
2. Start with a Meaningful Conversation, Not Spec Work
When discussing how Alice secured major projects like the Pendulumrebrand, Woods emphasizes the importance of engagement over spec work.
"In a pitch process, we typically avoid spec work for spec work's sake," Woods says.
Rather than blindly submitting creative proposals, Alice prefers starting with a meaningful conversation that helps build a genuine relationship with potential clients.
Woods often offers a free workshop instead of spec work, allowing both sides to gauge what it's like to work together.
"We often offer a free workshop instead of spec work, where we all get a sense of what it’s like to work together," Woods says.
This approach ensures that the client understands the team’s process and approach, laying the groundwork for a strong partnership moving forward.
3. Build Trust Through Radical Honesty
At Alice, trust is built on radical honesty.
"Don’t be a Yes-man," Woods says. "When you know something is a bad idea, say it."
Woods goes on to say:
"When you think that the client would be better off using a freelancer instead of your expensive agency rates, say it. And for God’s sake, when you’ve messed up, say it."
This level of transparency not only fosters a strong sense of trust but also helps set the stage for deeper, more authentic client relationships.
Woods believes that being honest, even when it’s uncomfortable, strengthens the overall partnership.
Do these things and "Your client will thank you," Woods says.
Create Impactful Relationships Through Trust and Alignment
At Alice, building lasting client partnerships isn’t just about producing standout creative.
It starts with shared values and a clear working dynamic.
As Paul Woods puts it:
“Above all else, we have a strict no asshole policy.
Life’s too short to work with jerks, and truthfully, good work rarely comes from these types of relationships anyway.”
That philosophy shapes everything from how Alice scopes work to how they pitch new clients.
“Do great work, don’t be an asshole, and your client will hire you again," Woods says.
"They’ll hire you at their new job, and they’ll proactively refer you to their colleagues in other companies.”
