Studies separately conducted by the Pew Research Center and Gallup show the following results:

So, we have compiled a list of the 10 best metro areas in the U.S. for remote work in 2024 to help you find the perfect city to call home.
“Businesses also benefit from the increased desirability of remote working, as it allows them the widest talent pool to choose the best candidates for a job,” DesignRush General Manager Gianluca Ferruggia said.
“This could be done by hiring workers for remote roles or by outsourcing projects to digital contractors when a full hire might not make financial sense. This increased importance for remote working options prompted this study.”
Let's start with Boulder, Colorado, which tops our list with a remote working suitability index of 77.5 out of 100. Although the cost of living is more expensive than average, the city boasts a high percentage of remote workers, affordable housing costs, and a fast yet cheap internet connection.
Coming in second is Raleigh-Cary in North Carolina with a score of 73.4. Rich in history and known for its museums, it has a strong tech industry and a high quality of life at a slightly above-average cost of living.
The Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown metro area in Texas is in third place, scoring 71.2 with its robust technology sector and strong job growth. Despite slightly higher housing costs, its dry summers and mild winters make the climate conducive for remote employees.
Bend, Oregon is the fourth most suitable metro area for remote work with a score of 70.9. This picturesque city boasts affordable fiber internet options. While housing costs are a bit above average, the natural beauty and remote work-friendly environment in Bend make it an ideal destination for remote professionals seeking a balanced lifestyle.
In fifth place is Punta Gorda, Florida, with a suitability index of 70.5. This sunny locale offers affordable housing options, a thriving remote-work community, and pleasant living conditions. Punta Gorda is a delightful place for remote professionals looking to blend work and relaxation.
Corvallis, Oregon is tied with Punta Gorda with a score of 70.5. This charming city has cheap high-speed internet options and housing costs aligning closely with the national average. This is the place for you if you’re looking for a family-friendly environment with many exciting outdoor activities.
Fort Collins, Colorado is the seventh-best metro area for remote work with a suitability index of 70.4. What makes this vibrant city appealing, other than its tech-friendly atmosphere and great bike routes, is that it serves some of the best high-quality craft beer.
The Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro area in Oregon and Washington takes the eighth spot with 69.9 points. Despite slightly higher housing costs, the cultural richness and work opportunities in this diverse region make it an exciting choice for those seeking a dynamic environment.
Now, if you're looking for a smaller city, the Durham-Chapel Hill metro area in North and South Carolina is a great choice. With a score of 69.7, this area has affordable housing options and a thriving tech scene.
Last, but not least, our last spot is filled by Ithaca, New York having 69.2 points. With a relatively low commute time and affordable housing options, Ithaca offers a picturesque and peaceful work setting with a great art scene.
“Many workers now prefer to work from home due to the better work-life balance it can provide, plus it can allow workers to take advantage of higher average salaries that might be paid in other areas than the areas in which they live,” Ferruggia concluded.
