Shohei Ohtani is joining Chandler Bats to build a global bat line, and he plans to work on the design himself.

The partnership is set to cover players from youth leagues to the Major Leagues, adding a marquee name to Chandler's brand identity.

Ohtani will help shape the vision, design, and refinement of each product alongside Chandler's team under a guiding standard of mastery through process.

"I'm looking forward to creating something truly different, bats and training tools that reflect how I think about the game and preparation," said Ohtani.

For Chandler CEO Ben Chase, the goal is to build a premium performance line that "establishes a new benchmark for what players should expect from their equipment."

Chandler calls the line a long-term global platform that will carefully grow into non-wood bats, training tools, youth models and international markets.

Each product hopes to meet the same premium standard before release.

Inside the SO17.4 Limited Drop

The first product is the SO17.4, a wood bat made to Ohtani's exact game-model specifications.

Chandler will release 1,000 in the coming weeks, and the company says the run is meant to be used by both players and collectors.

Half of the bats, 500, are reserved for the Japanese market to honor Ohtani's heritage and his connection with fans there.

The other 500 will go on sale as the World Edition.

Every bat ships with PSA authentication, a certificate of authenticity, an individual serial number, and premium collector packaging.

Fans and collectors can register now at ChandlerBats.com/SO17 to be notified when the bat becomes available, and they will receive purchase details ahead of the release.

After the wood release, the platform will move into a next-generation composite and aluminum line for amateur players, along with a series of training tools meant to help athletes develop.

A Small Run With a Wide Funnel

SFIA's 2026 Manufacturers' Sales by Category Report put baseball and softball wholesale at $891.4 million in 2025, up 7.9% from the year before.

SFIA data also showed 65% of U.S. youth ages 6 to 17 tried sports in 2024, the highest share the association has tracked since at least 2012.

Brands planning an athlete product line can borrow three moves from Chandler:

  • Launch with a halo product: A 1,000-bat run of the SO17.4 gives Chandler a serial-numbered flagship before the youth and amateur lines arrive.
  • Split inventory by market: Setting aside 500 bats for Japan and 500 for the World Edition gives each fan base its own reason to act early.
  • Open the waitlist before the product: The sign-up page at ChandlerBats.com/SO17 builds a list of interested buyers before the bats ship.

When an athlete helps design the product, the marketing has a story that just a logo can't supply.

Our Take: Will Ohtani's Standards Hold at Volume?

A numbered bat in PSA-authenticated packaging looks the part on a shelf, making the SO17.4 easy to admire.

The true test for these claims will be the youth models, because a kid in a batting cage judges a bat in about three swings and has no interest in a certificate like diehards would.

In short, they care more about performance than the novelty factor and name association.

Ohtani has described his own standards as feel, balance, consistency, and preparation, and those are hard qualities to hold when a product is made at volume.

We want to see whether an aluminum bat for a twelve-year-old carries the same obsession as the first 1,000 wood bats.
