When a Google algorithm update hits, businesses often respond with panic. But the most effective SEO strategies aren’t reactive; they’re resilient.

After the March 2024 Google Core Update, which penalized low-quality and keyword-stuffed content, one agency took a strategic path back to growth.

Ravi Chauhan, Managing Director of SearchCombat, led his team through a disciplined content overhaul for clients after the update.

Instead of chasing quick fixes, they focused on rewriting outdated content, improving UX, and aligning with Google’s helpful content framework.

In our interview, Ravi breaks down what worked, what didn’t, and the role of tools like AI and short-form video in the process.

Who is Ravi Chauhan?

Ravi Chauhan is the Managing Director of SearchCombat, a digital marketing agency specializing in White Label Services. He also serves as Principal Domain Consultant at SEO Domain Names and Principal SEO Consultant at Traffic Valley SEO, where he focuses on premium domain strategy and tailored SEO solutions for the retail sector.

The March 2024 Google Core Update was unforgiving for websites using outdated SEO tactics.

It was so brutal that a client lost 40% of its organic traffic almost immediately.

Ravi’s team traced the issue to thin product descriptions and keyword stuffing, tactics that used to work, but no longer held up to Google's quality standards.

“We rewrote outdated product descriptions, removed keyword stuffing, and added detailed explanations and real useful tips.

We went around and checked each and every page to ensure there was no outdated or irrelevant content,” Ravi says.

The turnaround didn’t happen overnight, but after four months of disciplined content updates, traffic started to recover.

By the sixth month, traffic returned to previous levels. One year later, it exceeded pre-update benchmarks.

“This experience showed us that it’s important to think about the long-term effects when implementing any SEO strategies.”

Local Optimization Delivers Steady Wins

A different challenge came in the form of a local plumbing company that was almost invisible in the SERPs.

“They barely appeared on Google Maps and local search listings,” Ravi explains.

SearchCombat stepped in with a focused local SEO playbook:

  • Optimize the company’s Google Business Profile
  • Build citations on niche directories
  • Improve on-site local keyword targeting
  • Earn local backlinks.
These are the tactics SearchCombat used to improve a business’local SEO. 

“We created local area pages to bring in more traffic and rank in the local search.

Gradually, their traffic started to recover… they started to get more leads through their GBP,” Ravi shares.

Even in hyper-competitive spaces, these tried-and-true tactics helped the business regain visibility and drive qualified leads.

Tools Are Nothing Without a Strategy

While the fundamentals haven’t changed, Ravi sees major opportunities for business growth through smarter SEO workflows, particularly using AI tools like ChatGPT.

“Instead of spending weeks researching keywords or writing drafts, teams can use AI to create content outlines, FAQs, and even organize keywords in just a few hours.

This helps businesses produce high-quality content quickly.”

Video SEO is another high-growth area.

Platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts are becoming part of the search ecosystem, especially for younger users.

“By making short videos with helpful tips or reviews and using the right keywords in captions, businesses can show up in searches and get discovered by more people,” Ravi says.

Likewise, ranking in AI chat tools like ChatGPT and Gemini is becoming a growth lever in its own right.

“If businesses structure their content well and provide expert information, they can be included in AI-generated responses."

Internal Links, Expert Reviews, and Conversion Focus

Beyond technical audits and speed optimizations, Ravi emphasizes the impact of smart internal linking.

“We’ve seen clients whose traffic jumped by 30–40% just by fixing their internal linking issues.”

He also recommends having content reviewed by subject matter experts to signal authority to Google.

“We write the content and then ask the client to approve it, especially if they are an expert. This way, we can say the content was verified by someone who knows the field well.”

And above all, Ravi says SEO should always connect to business outcomes.

“We worked with a SaaS company that had a lot of traffic, but very few people were turning into leads. The traffic went down a little, but the number of leads doubled.”

Avoiding the Panic Trap

One of Ravi’s key messages to clients is: don’t panic.

Too often, businesses react to traffic drops with sweeping, unplanned changes that make things worse.

“Most businesses go and start to modify almost everything on their site.

This route is generally the least recommended one,” he says.

Instead, brands should stick to three key principles:

  • Make your content helpful. Write content that actually answers what people are searching for.
  • Keep your site fast and functional. Prioritize speed and usability, especially on mobile.
  • Show your expertise clearly. Publish content verified or reviewed by real experts to build trust.
“Don’t just try to trick the algorithm. Make good content and your site will do better over time.” 

What’s Next: AI Overviews and Search Visibility

Looking ahead, Ravi sees Google’s AI Overviews as a defining change in SEO.

With more users seeing AI-generated summaries at the top of the search results, traditional organic listings are being pushed further down.

“To stay visible, your content needs to be structured clearly so AI can easily pull info from it,” he explains.

He also stresses the importance of being optimized for tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.

“These tools are now a real part of the search journey, especially in industries where users want deeper, conversational answers.”

SEO Will Keep Changing

With AI-generated results, changing user behavior, and tougher competition, SEO will continue to evolve quickly, forcing everyone to adapt.

That said, the core principle to guide success remains constant: build for users, not algorithms.

Ravi’s experience navigating Google’s March 2024 update is a case study in staying calm, focused, and strategic.

Whether it’s rewriting content, optimizing internal links, or structuring content for AI tools, this approach proves that long-term SEO growth comes from quality, relevance, and execution — not quick fixes.

As platforms shift and new tools emerge, businesses that commit to user value and technical discipline will continue to grow.

Regardless of what Google changes next.
