Digital Transformation: Key Findings
Years of research show fewer than 30% of transformations succeed, and only 16% of digital transformations both improve performance and sustain change over time, according to a McKinsey Global Survey.
The common failure point? Often, digital transformations fall short because of mindset misalignment, lack of execution speed, and poor adoption — not tech.
Executives often assume that upgrading tools or launching an AI pilot will automatically drive innovation.
But what separates real transformation from tech hype is:
- Clarity of purpose
- Organizational alignment
- Cultural buy-in
Dr. Joerg Storm, CEO and founder of Digital STORM, developed his speed-first approach over more than a decade, leading transformation across Asia — particularly in high-velocity markets like China and Japan.
He has advised global brands and led transformations for one of Germany’s top carmakers, bridging leadership, strategy, and AI innovation.
In episode 102 of the DesignRush Podcast, Dr. Storm shares how Asia’s fast-paced execution shaped his leadership philosophy and why digital transformation is more human than most leaders realize.

4 AI Strategy Shifts That Help Companies Scale Fast
When it comes to leading through disruption, these strategy shifts determine whether AI adds real value or becomes a wasted investment.
1. Shift from Perfection to Speed
Dr. Storm’s years in China taught him a critical truth: acting fast is more valuable than acting flawlessly.
“In China, decisions happen super fast. And the business, they don't get stuck in long approval process. They simply try. They fail and they iterate,” Dr. Storm explains.
“They can live with 80 % solutions. They don't need to over-engineer everything.”
The speed-focused mindset allowed his teams to iterate quickly, test ideas, and build momentum — lessons he later applied inside slower-moving European companies.
2. Treat AI as Business Transformation, Not Tech
Many executives buy tools hoping for quick innovation. But Dr. Storm warns against this trap.
“And we could have thrown very easily an AI chatbot in, but what we did before, we also analyzed the complete customer touch point on also, especially the pain point of the customer journey,” he says.
Real value comes from aligning AI to business bottlenecks.
In one example, his team improved customer service outcomes by combining AI automation with human expertise after mapping the full customer journey first.
3. Start With Clear Use Cases and Metrics
Before investing in tools, Storm advises companies to define measurable problems AI can solve.
His framework:
- Identify bottlenecks or opportunities
- Design around the full user journey
- Prioritize adoption and outcomes over novelty
Key metrics he tracks include:
- Business impact (e.g., cost savings, revenue lift)
- Adoption rates and engagement
- Accuracy and data quality
- Scalability and model speed
4. Lead With Culture, Not Just Tech
Whether scaling AI or driving transformation, culture is the multiplier.
“You can implement the best tech in the world,” he explains, “but if the people and organizations are not behind you, are not ready to adapt, this will not work.”
He recommends:
- Transparent communication
- Including employees in the process
- Celebrating quick wins
- Trust and psychological safety
This inclusive, agile approach helped him implement transformation inside legacy companies without stalling on bureaucracy or resistance.
