A reality TV crown just became a pitch for cash back.
Trinity Tatum, fresh off her Love Island Season 8 win, has signed her first brand partnership since exiting the villa.
She fronts a Verizon campaign as the "Queen of Cash," a modern, empowered monarch touring a palace of excess.
Verizon uses royal imagery to sell the idea that getting paid back should feel as good as spending.
"Working with Verizon and the amazing Warren Fu to bring this 'Queen of Cash' moment to life was such a dream," Tatum said in a press release.
"I've been with Verizon forever and loved this world they created for me with 'Verizon Dollars.'"
The deal continues the company's model to sign rising talent, including recent partnerships with Connor Storrie and Stephen Kalyn.
Leslie Berland, Verizon's CMO and EVP, shared that Tatum's hold on her audience is what made her the right first face for Verizon Dollars.
"She's glamorous, playful, and charismatic," Berland said.
Berland added that Tatum's fans respond to her in a way no brand can produce on its own.
Verizon's influencer marketing bench runs on speed, since signing a breakout star weeks after her win costs less than bidding for her later.
What the Spot Sets Up
The social-led spot was produced by Partizan and directed by Fu, known for music video work with Dua Lipa, Daft Punk, Doja Cat, and SZA.
The spot introduces "Verizon Dollars," a benefit rolled out in July that gives customers who opt in 3% back on their monthly bill.
The cash back can go toward new devices and accessories, or get boosted up to 5x when applied across retail, travel, dining, and lifestyle brands.
The royal framing is a way to dramatize the fairly plain mechanics of money coming back automatically, without a redemption maze.
Verizon also layered brand activations on top of the video.
On launch day, the brand is surprising select Instagram commenters with gifted Verizon Dollars through the "Royal Treatment" sweepstakes.
It offers winners the same Motorola Razr featured in the ad, a replica of Tatum's phone case, and a recreation of her on-set press-on nail kit.
Both efforts sit inside "Verizon Shine," the carrier's loyalty platform meant to deliver weekly experiences, daily drops, and rewards to existing customers.
For Verizon, the math is straightforward.
It put a fresh, high-engagement face in front of a benefit that still needs explaining, then backs it with real rewards that people can claim.
Whether this strategy translates into signups depends more on how many customers notice the 3% showing up in their accounts.
A Routine Credit Worth Noticing
A benefit that pays customers automatically only works if people notice it is there.
Several lessons can be drawn from Verizon's approach.
1. Match the talent to the emotional register of the product.
Cash back is a low-drama benefit. Tatum's built-in reputation for charisma and confidence gives it a personality it wouldn't have on its own.
2. Use the metaphor to explain the mechanic, not just decorate it.
The royal setting reframes "getting money back" as a reward you're owed, which is the exact behavior Verizon Dollars is designed to push.
3. Pair the ad efforts with rewards people can win.
The Instagram gifting and sweepstakes give the campaign a second, lower-effort entry point beyond watching the ad once.
Automatic rewards have a quiet failure mode.
Forrester's 2024 Consumer Benchmark Survey found that 34% of U.S. adults in a loyalty program frequently forget to use the programs they've joined.
A splashy launch video draws attention once, but Verizon Shine's recurring drops and sweepstakes are the parts made to keep customers checking in.
Our Take: Can a Fantasy Make People Remember a Cashback Reward?
Three percent back is a number, and numbers are hard to feel.
What Verizon tested here is whether Tatum's fans will still be thinking about "Queen of Cash" the next time their bill posts and the credit shows up.
That's a longer gamble than a launch-week metric can answer.
We think that if it works, it won't be because of the crown.
It'll be because Verizon found a way to make a recurring account credit feel like it was worth waiting for.
