Beauty giant Sephora has teamed up with award-winning director Taika Waititi on a new holiday campaign.

Made in partnership with agency TBWA\Chiat\Day LA, "Don't Overthink It. Give Something Beautiful" aims to alleviate the pressures of holiday shopping by posing Sephora as the go-to gift solution. 

The campaign, marked by several spots, puts together the acclaimed director's wit and humor with the joy and warmth of the holiday season.

Drawing on the insight that 28% of Sephora's audience finds shopping for beauty products too personal and 37% feel intimidated by beauty stores, the campaign hopes to change this perception.

With Waititi's creative touch, "Don't Overthink It. Give Something Beautiful" sends a powerful message — finding something "beautiful" this holiday season shouldn't be a daunting task.

"Holiday gifting should be joyful, but for many, it often brings stress in the search for the perfect gift. To address this, we’ve created a campaign that highlights how seamless great gifting can be when you shop at Sephora," shared Zena Arnold, chief marketing officer at Sephora US.
"At Sephora, we make the gift finding process easy, and I’m excited to bring this to life in a new approach based in consumer insight and storytelling."

Holiday marketing is always tricky, with many companies often struggling to strike the perfect balance of a comedic and heartwarming brand story.

With Waititi's filmic charm in the mix, Sephora delivered a vibrant campaign that turns gift-giving into a delightful adventure.

Don't Complicate It

The 15-second spot "Your BFF's Kid Xander" unfolds at a gathering of friends.

One woman is faced with the dilemma of finding a holiday gift for her best friend's teenage kid, Xander, who has outgrown the unicorn phase.

She wonders, "What are they interested in now?"

As the group takes selfies, she notices Xander's interest in appearances, leading her to the idea of gifting them Sephora beauty products.

The next spot, titled "Your Husband Dan," shows a man wondering what to buy his partner of 14 years for Christmas.

As his partner looks at his reflection by the stove, the inspiration strikes — why not get him something from Sephora?

"Maybe something for the other love of his life," the narrator chimes in, as the spot ends. 

"Your Aunt Aya" follows the niece of a globe-trotting elderly woman who has visited multiple countries this past year.

Figuring out how to impress her cool aunt, the niece gets the idea to give her "something chic she can carry-on" — a travel set from Sephora.

This clever approach to holiday gifting mirrors the creative spirit seen in TBWA’s recent campaigns, including the collaboration with Levi's and pop star Beyoncé.
