Red Lobster just gave best friends one bib to share between them.

The chain and agency partner BarkleyOKRP released the "Crabfest Bestie Bib" for International Day of Friendship.

It's a tandem design made to fit two people at the same table.

The drop lands as Crabfest returns to Red Lobster with new flavors on the menu.

"No one owns the bib like Red Lobster," said Sam Bonds, SVP group creative director at BarkleyOKRP.

"It's an iconic part of the experience, and we're always looking for fun ways to reinvent it.

"So when we realised International Day of Friendship fell during Crabfest, we thought: why not create the first-ever tandem bib built for besties?"

Fashion designer Whitney Manney worked on the bib itself.

Her past projects include A$AP Rocky, Cardi B, and Monica Beverly Hillz of RuPaul's Drag Race, giving the design credibility most restaurant merch doesn't bother chasing.

Two Friends, One Bib

The Bestie Bib is a limited run, and Red Lobster made people work for it.

Entries opened on the chain's Instagram, where fans could win one by commenting and tagging the friend they'd wear it with.

Real best-friend pairs helped front the rollout, including local news co-anchor duos.

San Francisco's "Baddies Who Crab" also take the campaign spotlight, being two friends who built a crabbing meetup that's since grown into a wider community.

Friends who miss the giveaway still get a way in.

Red Lobster and Snapchat turned the concept into an ongoing brand partnership through a custom lens.

The new feature maps the two-headed bib onto two faces at once, so any pair can try it on without winning anything.

The tandem format does something a solo bib can't by forcing a second person into the frame.

A photo of one bib is a menu item, while a photo of two people stuck wearing one bib together is a story.

That's the difference between a product shot and something a friend group is bound to share on their socials.

Best Friends are Good for Business

Red Lobster is tapping into a friendship shortage that's well documented.

A GWI-cited surveyfound 80% of Gen Z felt lonely in the past year.

Additionally, Bumble data shows 66% of young people want new friends while 52% haven't made one in the last twelve months.

That combination, wanting connection but struggling to build it, gives a two-person product more than just novelty.

  • Design with groups in mind: A product built to need a plus-one turns a single order into two guests and two check-ins.
  • Cast the kind of people that would benefit your product: Pairing the bib with existings friendship like Baddies Who Crab reads as evidence the product works, not just an ad for it.
  • Give the left-out crowd a free version: The Snapchat lens lets anyone recreate the bib moment digitally, so those who miss out still get content out of it.

A brand chasing the same insight should ask whether its product still makes sense with how many other people are standing there.

Our Take: What's the Real Prize Here?

We keep coming back to the fact that Baddies Who Crab started with two women who'd just lost their jobs and went crabbing on a whim.

It then amassed a following before any restaurant chain noticed.

Luckily for Red Lobster, these people were already living the pitch, and all it had to do was put a bib on them.

That's a more cost-effective and honest research process than any focus group, and it's why the casting here matters more than the merchandise.

The real prize of this campaign isn't the bib at all, but the way the restaurant was able to attach itself to a kind of friendship people were proud enough of to film.
