McDonald’s Canada is giving one of its longest-running promotions a high-gloss makeover.

The Monopoly Golden Edition launched across Canada on September 29 with more than $400 million in prizes.

The prize pool includes:

  • A 10-karat gold Quarter Pounder
  • Three McDonald’s-for-life cards
  • $25,000 weekly cash prizes from September 29 through November 2
  • Cars

All this is done to make Monopoly feel new again as it approaches its 40th anniversary.

The promotion keeps the familiar peel-and-play mechanic that has defined the McDonald’s version of Monopoly for decades.

"A McDonald’s run can turn into a game pretty quickly: one more item, one more peel, one more shot at a big win," said Jennifer DelVecchio, CMO at McDonald’s Canada.

"With Golden Edition, we wanted to make the game feel bigger and more exciting, with bold new surprises and a LOT more gold, including a 10-karat gold Quarter Pounder.”

Created by Cossette, the above-the-line campaign gives the Monopoly universe a gold-heavy visual identity inspired by the board game and McDonald’s Golden Arches.

Familiar tokens return with a new finish, while the prizes are presented as a larger-than-life mountain of gold.

The Game Goes Beyond The Peel

The creative rollout is marked by a hero spot where a golden plane flies over McDonald's diners as it drops gold cash onto their tables.

Different gold-finished tokens like dice, dogs, wheelbarrows, and more are scattered around the restaurant to push the Monopoly motif.

The spot ends with the narrator announcing "bigger, bolder, and golder" prizes awaiting every customer.

The campaign then moved across TV, OOH, radio, digital, social creator channels, and bespoke integrations, including "The Price is Right Tonight."

It also brings together OMD/AP for media, Publicis Hawkeye for CRM, and Weber Shandwick for PR and creators.

For a promotion this established, consistency is valuable.

Monopoly is already one of the world's most recognized game brands, with Hasbro reporting more than 1 billion players across 114 countries.

McDonald’s therefore has a ready-made visual language and set of mechanics that can do much of the explanatory work.

This allows its marketing to focus on making this year's edition feel distinctive.

TMS took responsibility for expanding the promotion across the retail experience, packaging, prize partnerships, and digital gameplay.

In the McDonald’s app, players can move around an immersive 3D gameboard by tapping "GO" to reveal prizes, while every five codes entered unlocks exclusive partner discounts.

The Golden Edition’s Marketing Lessons

McDonald's Canada's effort follows the direction of its U.S. Monopoly program.

With mechanics similar to the Canada rollout, the U.S. version entails physical game pieces that are scanned through the McDonald’s App to earn prizes, properties, and Chance Card gameplay.

It's an approach that makes the overall promotion part of the brand’s digital ecosystem, ensuring the interaction doesn't start and end at the restaurant counter.

Three marketing lessons stand out:

  • Give legacy IP a visual reason to return: McDonald’s gold treatment gives a familiar promotion a fresh campaign identity that can stand apart from previous editions.
  • Make the promotion useful beyond winning: Partner discounts, app gameplay, cash prizes, food rewards, and major physical prizes give customers several reasons to participate, widening the value of the promotion beyond the small percentage of players who win headline prizes.
  • Use physical media to drive digital behavior: The peel creates the initial interaction, while the app provides a place for continued gameplay and customer engagement.

McDonald’s says Monopoly Golden Edition runs through November 2, with game stamp codes accepted through November 23.

The longevity of the Monopoly brand also gives McDonald’s a foundation for recurring promotions, with the game accumulating recognition across generations and more than 300 licensed versions.

Our Take: Is Gold Enough to Keep Monopoly Hungry?

We tend to think of brand identity as something that lives in logos and color systems, but here it becomes a physical reward system customers can see on their food.

This gives the campaign a useful kind of excess, because the creative idea and the prize strategy speak the same language.

The interesting part for us is how much permission an established promotion gives McDonald’s to go all out.

With an enduring brand partnership spanning decades, the two may have struck gold in finding the perfect partner in pulling each other up.
