The PlayStation startup chime now comes with 1,911 bricks.

LEGO and PlayStation just launched the first LEGO PlayStation, a near-1:1 scale model of the original console, with a campaign called "Play Like It's 1994."

Design Director Frédéric André shared that the project started with his own gaming history.

"I've always been a gamer, but I didn't own a PlayStation® myself," he says.

"I'd go to my friend's house, and we'd spend entire afternoons playing together."

The team worked from original PlayStation schematics, which led to new LEGO elements for the controller buttons and the console's Open and Power buttons.

"We wanted fans to recognize it immediately," he added.

Notably, the product design also hides brick-built Gran Turismo and Ape Escape dioramas inside the console for builders who look closely.

Friends Assemble the Console on Film

Directed by Somesuch director Alfie Whiteman, the launch film opens on the orchestral swell of the PlayStation startup sound.

A high-pitched beep sets off a fast rhythmic beat as a group of friends gathers the pieces of the console's four main action buttons: Triangle, Circle, X, and Square.

Their search runs through dance, '90s raves, screen printing, skateboarding, and DJ-ing before the pieces come together as the finished LEGO PlayStation.

The film works as part product demo and part tribute to the console.

It shows the functional Open and Power buttons and the moment a controller plugs in, which gives the set's intricate details screen time.

It also links the thrill of unboxing the original console to unboxing the LEGO version on the October 1 release date.

Builders appear assembling a mini Gran Turismo track with tiny cars and a scene from Ape Escape, pointing viewers to the game history inside the set.

The $123 Billion Toy Market

Circana's 2026 Global Toy Report put the global toy industry at $123 billion in 2025, up 8%.

Buyers aged 15 and older account for nearly 20% of sales, and their spending has more than doubled since 2020.

LEGO's sales to end consumers grew 16% in 2025, while the global toy market grew 7%, according to Il Sole 24 Ore.

A console that debuted in 1994 gives LEGO a product whose first owners are now adult game enthusiasts with their own budgets.

To the marketers launching a nostalgia-led product to adult buyers, three takeaways stand out:

  • Ground the pitch in a shared activity: The startup chime and the controller plug-in are things that PlayStation's audience would be able to recognize immediately.
  • Being detail-oriented pays off to fans looking for easter eggs: The Gran Turismo and Ape Escape dioramas give builders extra content to appreciate post after opening the box.
  • Match the film's look to the buying moment: Home-video footage mirrors the excitement of unboxing and keeps the demo personal.

LEGO's most recent music collaboration shows how differently the company can approach a fan-facing launch.

Its Olivia Rodrigo launch sent fans into stores for 333 hidden vinyl records after a 110,000-brick takeover.

Similarly, the PlayStation launch relies on a film and the set's hidden details, reaching any market with a screen.

And if there's one thing in common both campaigns share, it's how they both build emotional connection with their fans.

Our Take: Is the Build the Real Loading Screen?

The startup chime opens the film for good reason, because the original console made players wait, and the wait was part of the thrill.

We think the set understands that better than the ad does.

Assembling 1,911 pieces takes real time at a table, and every stage delays the payoff the way a loading screen once did.

It also leaves the PlayStation name as a novelty object that sits in a room for years, much like how everyone's old console did at its time.

Overall, fan and nostalgia marketing sells best when the creative recreates the feeling of owning something original, which matters most as the holiday shopping window opens.
