The National Hockey League (NHL) has launched a new spot promoting the 4 Nations Face-Off international hockey tournament.

Made together with agency Arts & Letters (A&L), "For Country. For Glory. Four Nations." serves as an ode to the fans and a way to generate hype for the unique tournament, spicing up the sport of hockey.

Harping on national pride, it features fans of the four nations as well as NHL players Mikko Rantanen (FIN), Nathan MacKinnon (CAN) and Cale Makar (CAN) of the Colorado Avalanche, as they become rivals in the high-stakes tournament.

NHL Senior VP of Marketing Casey Hall shared his thoughts behind the campaign, saying the spot helps position the tournament as a "social and cultural event that unites casual and avid fans through national pride."

"It reinforces the NHL’s global fanbase, star players and the return of best-on-best international competition that will continue over the next decade with NHL players in the Winter Olympics and World Cup of Hockey," he added.

A&L Creative Director Chris Kim affirmed this sentiment, sharing that their new ad heightens the stakes and creates excitement for "the best-on-best International hockey competition."

"For Country. For Glory. Four Nations." follows the successful "That's Hockey" campaign the brand and agency launched in 2024, which sought to celebrate the start of the 2024-25 NHL season.

Exhilarating as it is entertaining, the latest efforts are a display of Arts & Letters' masterful vision and expertise behind making some of the best sports commercials in recent memory

It ensures the brand identity of each league or promotion is met by understanding the nuances of each sport.

Partnering with ad agencies that understand brand vision is integral in creating effective campaigns like the NHL's.

For Who?

Set to the tune of "Boys in the Better Land" by Fontaines D.C., the 30-second commercial starts off with fans and players taking turns showing off the pride they carry for their nations.

They then get to the meat of the tournament and who their respective teams stand for: friends, foes, teammates-turned-rivals, the frozen ponds of Sweden, still believing in miracles, the lion, the three crowns, and the Maple Leaf.

Viewers are treated to brief cameos of some of the sport's most recognizable players, including Sidney Crosby, Auston Matthews, and Matthew Tkachuk to name a few.

"For Glory. For Country. Four Nations." the screen writes, amidst jumping cuts of game highlights.

The spot ends with the kickoff date of the tournament, taking place on February 13.

Previously, Arts & Letters launched its "This One Is Different" National Championship spot for ESPN.
