Etsy and Orchard's Campaign Takeaways:
- Etsy celebrates its 20th year with a heartfelt campaign focused on individual makers.
- Orchard’s new TV spot captures the raw, repetitive work behind handmade goods.
- The campaign ends by reminding users that truly special items are just a tap away.
Etsy is celebrating its 20th anniversary by turning the spotlight away from products and onto the people who create them.
Created by agency Orchard, the brand’s latest campaign titled “What it Takes,” is a quiet but powerful tribute to the makers who fuel its marketplace.
Instead of focusing on flashy reveals or curated rooms, the new TV spot centers on the mess, repetition, and rawness of handmade work.
“In a time when so much of what we see and buy feels the same, there’s something powerful about discovering an item that’s truly special,” said Etsy CMO Brad Minor.

Etsy's 2024 campaign highlighted how the platform brings humanity to a world shaped by machines.
This year, Minor emphasizes that the focus is on "celebrating originality in a shopping landscape that often prioritises convenience over creativity."
"We’re proud to spotlight the real stories and skill behind each item — and show how it’s easier than ever to find those special pieces through our app," he added.
Orchard’s executive creative director Heather Larimer expounded on this sentiment, saying the most meaningful online shopping experiences start with people who care for their craft.
Behind Every Item
Directed by Will Dohrn via Love Song, the campaign follows three Etsy sellers Maria, Alicia, and Luke, as they sketch, solder, mold, and start over.
The spot slows down the shopping experience, tracing each item back to its maker and showing what it really takes to bring unique products to life.
The film is quiet and deliberate, starting with close-up shots of hands sanding, sketching, and shaping.

"The journey is also part of the process, and the end result is just as beautiful," Alicia shares.
Overall, the spot captures the human effort behind craftsmanship: failed attempts, redrafts, concentration, and eventually, triumph.
On-screen phrases like “Crafted by Alicia” and “Molded by Maria” highlight Etsy’s Creativity Standards and reinforce that every product has both a story and a name behind it.
Our Take: Can Process Outshine the Product?
As mass production and AI-generated products grow more common, shoppers are increasingly drawn to brands that feel human and handmade.
Etsy and Orchard make this point beautifully in their new campaign.
In showing the hard work behind creativity, the platform shifts the narrative from product to process. It's an effective reminder of what sets the platform apart.
What stood out to me was how restrained the ad felt. Zero gimmicks, just makers and their work.
It's one of the cleanest examples of how brand storytelling can focus not on what’s being sold, but on why it matters.
Previously, JanSport created a campaign with Party Land that brings back its singing backpacks.
