Gaming giant Blizzard Entertainment is partnering with CureDuchenne, a global nonprofit that aims to accelerate a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, to show that online friendships matter, especially to those whose mobility is limited.
The partnership is inspired by "The Remarkable Life of Ibelin," an award-winning Netflix documentary that chronicles the life of Norwegian World of Warcraft player Mats Steen.
Known in-game as Ibelin, a helpful and charismatic detective, Mats suffered from Duchenne and was confined to a wheelchair until his untimely death in 2014 at 25 years old.
After his passing, his parents found out about the secret virtual life their son lived in World of Warcraft, which was filled with friendship and love.

Mats helped over 50 people across Europe; in one instance, even encouraged someone on the Autism Spectrum to go back to school.
"Now after learning and reading the story of Mats, we understand that there's more to this gaming community.
Because it is not games, these are real social interralations that you have with other people," Robert Steen, Mats' father, said in the trailer released by World of Warcraft.
Central to the campaign is a special in-game promotion called "The Reven Pack," which was created to raise funds for the organization.
Available for $20 until January 7, 2025, it comes with a unique pet fox named Reven, inspired by Ibelin's detective persona, alongside a transmog backpack, Reven's Comfy Carrier, with the fox sleeping cozily inside.

By focusing on the positive impact individual players can have on the general player base, World of Warcraft is telling authentic stories to benefit a cause.
"We want to renew and confirm our commitment to making sure whoever wants to play our game can.
And that's doing research, talking to communities with accessibility needs and wants, and making sure we're committed to allowing anyone who wants to play World of Warcraft to have that opportunity," World of Warcraft Executive Producer and VP Holly Longdale explained.
With consumers nowadays increasingly becoming more conscious of a brand's values and social initiatives, it's imperative for companies to take a social stand and create a purpose for their brands.
Businesses that want to build or refresh their identity can then focus more on developing their brand purpose as it relates to what they value and what's close to their hearts.
Brands aiming to create campaigns that resonate deeply with their audiences can then collaborate with creative agencies to align their initiatives with impactful storytelling.
Honoring a Fallen Warrior
All of the proceeds made from the limited-edition items will be donated to CureDuchenne, which is the world's leading nonprofit in research, patient care, and innovation for helping those with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Longdale highlighted Mats' story in a press release, where she shared how it felt to work with the Steen family.
"Working with CureDuchenne for our Charity Pet Program, in honor of Mats' memory, allows us to harness the power of our phenomenal global community to bring meaningful impact to so many lives," she concluded.

Blizzard Entertainment game developers also honored Ibelin yesterday by announcing the addition of a special in-game memorial shrine, commemorating the many years of adventures the late gamer had on the platform.
The move is a significant moment in the history of Blizzard Entertainment, which has been known to honor its most dedicated fans on rare occasions.
A division of Microsoft-owned Activision Blizzard, the developer is also behind some of the most iconic games over the last three decades, including Overwatch, Hearthstone, and StarCraft.
Last year, the brand launched a unique immersive audio experience that transported sleeping fans into the world of Diablo IV.
