Solving a cookie's identity has never carried a $25,000 reward until now.

The Chips Ahoy! brand introduced its first-ever Mystery Cookie on July 30.

It's a limited-edition flavor hidden behind caution-tape packaging and a story about a snack that broke through from another flavor dimension.

Fans are asked to guess what's inside, with the answer staying under wraps until Halloween.

Chip, the brand's mascot, serves as a guide through the search, with the premise of the campaign designed for social sharing.

Nobody, including the people buying the cookies, knows what flavor they're eating.

"For Gen Z, snacking and gaming aren't just pastimes, but how they connect, recharge and build community," said Mili Laddha, Senior Director Marketing, Mondelēz International.

"With the CHIPS AHOY! Mystery Cookie, we're leveling up the snacking experience to match their energy."

This makes the cookie more like an entry point into an ongoing conversation with fans.

This distinction shapes the entire rollout, including the product marketing decisions behind where the cookie appears first.

A TikTok-First Rollout

Chips Ahoy! Mystery Cookies went live July 30 on SnackWorks' TikTok Shop storefront in limited quantities, marking the brand's first product drop on the platform.

National retail shelves follow on August 10, giving the TikTok release nearly two weeks as the only way to get the cookie in hand.

To play along, fans scan a QR code on the packaging or visit CHIPSAHOYMystery.com to submit an official flavor guess.

This enters them for a chance at a $25,000 grand prize.

The brand says active participants can also win additional prizes along the way.

The flavor itself won't be confirmed until Halloween, stretching anticipation over three months and giving the brand a recurring reason to post as guesses roll in.

Compressed Timeline, Extended Payoff

Most flavor mystery campaigns solve themselves within days, but Chips Ahoy! stretched its case to three months and gave it two separate release moments.

  • Sequence the exclusivity: A TikTok Shop-only window creates urgency before national shelves widen access, rewarding the most engaged fans first.
  • Turn guessing into participation: Submitting a flavor theory takes more effort than entering a sweepstakes, which is why it can be posted about, screenshotted, and debated.
  • Tie the reveal to an event your products are often associated with: Halloween gets more eyes on the flavor drop, giving Chips Ahoy! costume-adjacent theme it can use for free.

Overall, CHIPS AHOY! is using scarcity and a long guessing window to keep a single product relevant across an entire retail season, instead of spending on one big launch moment.

Our Take: Can a Cookie Sustain a Three-Month Guessing Game?

Three months is a long time to ask people to care about one flavor.

We think CHIPS AHOY! is counting on the guessing itself to carry more weight than the answer, which is a real ask for a category known for instant gratification.

The TikTok Shop exclusive is the smarter move here, giving the product weeks of free attention from fans trying to be first.

If engagement dips before August 10, the brand will have oversold the mystery.

But if the guesses keep coming, Chips Ahoy! will have shown that a snack can hold attention the same way a limited drop or a season premiere does.
