Chipotle is using the back-to-school season to create a three-week habit for its loyal student customers.

The fast-casual chain will launch a "School Spirit BOGO" on August 20, followed by three consecutive Sundays of free entrée codes.

The BOGO runs inside restaurants only, and the Sunday offer runs only through the app and website.

This promo strategy gives Chipotle several opportunities to stay top of mind as students and families settle back into the rhythms of a new school year.

The "School Spirit BOGO" asks customers to make their affiliation visible.

Guests wearing school apparel or accessories can buy one entrée and receive a second free from 3:00 p.m. until closing at participating U.S. locations.

College sweatshirts, high school jerseys, and school hats all count.

Chipotle is making school gear the physical qualification for the discount, and restaurant staff decides whether yours counts.

Then comes Chipotle Sundays.

"Back-to-school season is all about showing your school spirit and getting back into the routines that make the week feel a little easier," Chipotle SVP of Brand Marketing Stephanie Perdue said in a press release.

"Whether you're repping your school or resetting with Chipotle on a Sunday, these offers are about meeting our guests in the moments that matter to them with real food and great value."

Ultimately, splitting the two offers across in-store and digital gives the chain two conversion goals out of a single stretch of seasonal marketing.

Three Sundays, Digital Orders Only

Chipotle says "Chipotle Sundays" has emerged as an end-of-weekend ritual on TikTok.

Creators have posted themselves unwinding with a Chipotle fix at the end of a long week.

They unpack the order in front of the camera and talk through the craving.

Now, the brand is attaching an actual offer to the trend.

The Sunday offer runs on August 23, August 30, and September 6 in the U.S. and Canada.

Customers who order at least two entrées after 3:00 p.m. through the app or website get a free entrée with the code "SUNDAYS."

Sunday evening already works as the handoff between the weekend and the school week.

Chipotle now has a standing reason to show up there three weeks running.

The back-to-school marketing effort also connects with Chipotle's existing student infrastructure.

The Chipotle U Rewards program gives eligible college students 1,000 bonus points upon sign-up and 20% more points on purchases.

Students can verify enrollment through ID.me and continue earning toward free Chipotle.

The chain launched the program during last year's back-to-school season.

In November, a separate Rivalry Week contest ranked college towns by how many new Chipotle U members they signed up.

Students in the top ten towns got a BOGO code dropped into their rewards wallets.

Chipotle keeps returning to school identity because it hands the loyalty marketing team a segment it can address without buying audience data.

Three Lessons for Seasonal Campaign Planning

Chipotle is attaching a purchase to something students already do on their own. The structure offers three lessons for marketers:

  • Turn one occasion into a sequence: A seasonal campaign has more value when each activation gives customers another reason to return.
  • Match the offer to a behavior the audience already has: Promotions register faster when the ritual behind them is familiar.
  • Route the campaign into a loyalty program: The promotional window closes, and the program is where the relationship continues.

A recurring offer also trains customers to wait for the discount, which is why customer loyalty programs have to pick up the margin afterward.

Our Take: Can School Spirit Become a Loyalty Signal?

A school shirt tells Chipotle more about a customer than a sign-up form ever will.

We think that it counts as a loyalty signal, and the August 20 BOGO is where Chipotle throws most of it away.

Order on a Sunday and the app knows who you are, what you got, and how often you come back.

Wear your jersey on August 20, and a crew member glances at it, hands over a free burrito, and that's the end of it.

Chipotle U Rewards already solved this for college kids with ID.me, but the high schoolers in team hoodies walk out as anonymous checks.

We think the apparel check should live in the app, maybe a photo upload or a school field at checkout.

Then, Chipotle would have a student list that it can hit every August.
