Can AI really handle SEO like a pro?
With global SEO spend set to surpass $147 billion by 2025 and over 91% of marketers confirming its ROI, brands are doubling down on content, keywords, and discoverability.
At the same time, ChatGPT (800M+ users) and Gemini (400M MAUs) are reshaping how teams execute this strategy by automating briefs, audits, and even schema.
To understand how these AI tools actually perform, DesignRush ran 30 real-world SEO tasks through both models.
The prompts spanned five essential categories that reflect the full spectrum of what clients request, what strategists develop, and what teams are increasingly delegating to AI.
Our goal was simple: To find out where ChatGPT and Gemini help, where they fall short, and how smart teams can use them more effectively.
What Was Tested?
We grouped the 30 questions into 5 real-world SEO categories:
- SEO Basics

- Technical SEO
- AI Visibility & SEO’s Future
Each section measured how effectively the tools explained, applied, and contextualized SEO knowledge for real use cases.
1. SEO Basics
- “What is SEO?”
- “What are backlinks?”
- “What’s link building?”
These are foundational questions, ones clients or new team members ask first.
You want AI to explain clearly, with no jargon.
ChatGPT stood out here. Its tone is more natural, less robotic, and easier for non-SEOs to digest.
2. Keyword Research & Strategy
- “How do I find keywords?”
- “What is keyword proximity?”
- “What’s a long-tail keyword?”
This is where most SEO strategies start.
If your AI tool can’t guide keyword thinking properly, it’s no help.
Mostly a tie, but ChatGPT had smoother explanations. Gemini leaned more instructional; ChatGPT leaned more conversational. '
3. Content SEO & Funnels
- “What’s the difference between content and copy?”
- “How do you optimize for search intent?”
- “How does content fit into the funnel?”
AI tools are used to help draft blog content, site pages, landing pages, etc.
If they can't understand intent, you’ll get fluff.
ChatGPT wins here again. Its answers reflected more awareness of audience needs, funnel stages, and real-world writing.
4. Technical SEO
- “What is technical SEO?”
- “What’s a sitemap?”
- “What is robots meta tag?”
While most teams start with content, technical SEO still impacts indexing, site speed, and crawlability.
Gemini did better here. It was more direct and structured, which works well for technical breakdowns.
5. AI, SEO, and Business Visibility
- “How can my business show up in ChatGPT or Gemini answers?”
- “What’s the role of SEO in the AI era?”
- “How do we prove SEO’s value with all these AI tools around?”
This is the new frontier. SEO teams are now thinking about how to appear in AI summaries, not just search results.
Both tools were helpful. Gemini leaned more into Google’s view, while ChatGPT gave better real-world tips.
The Quick Verdict: ChatGPT Is the More "Human" SEO Expert
From tone and teaching clarity to aligning content to user intent, ChatGPT edged out Gemini in most content-focused areas.
This is especially true in areas where the OpenAI platform needed to "think like an SEO," not just recite facts.
