High-end tequila brand Cantera Negra made its brand debut with a cinematic spot, produced in collaboration with indie advertising and design company Colossus, that features the fiery story behind its hallmark tequila.

Formulated about 40 years ago by Don Alberto Becherano in Mexico, the brand was only launched in the United States in 2017. In 2022, it was acquired by Deutsch Family Wine and Spirits.

“Cantera Negra Tequila: Born from Volcanic Soil" marks its first advertising campaign in the country, intending to spread brand awareness and recognition.

Using classic Hollywood-style hand-painted canvas backdrops and stop-motion animation, a “badass woman” with the perfect cocktail tells the brand’s origins.

“Imagine Frida Kahlo, but with a James Bond bravado. At a Mexican rodeo. At the foot of an active volcano. Drinking really great tequila,” the agency said on Instagram.

Using the analog talents of old-school matte painters, Colossus Design created a visually striking commercial that immerses audiences in the world of Cantera Negra Tequila.

This approach combines traditional artistry with contemporary storytelling, elevating the Cantera Negra heritage and high-end positioning. 

For brands looking to bring their stories to life with unique campaigns like this, marketing strategies that blend creativity with storytelling are key to resonating with audiences long after the campaign ends.

Brand stories enable businesses to create a lasting emotional connection with their audience while establishing a unique identity and showcasing its core values.

The campaign rolls out across social media with a focus on the New York, New Jersey, and Texas markets where Cantera Negra has a strong presence.

Cantera Negra Tequila’s Cinematic Brand Debut

The 30-second spot opens with a group of people sitting around a table in the desert, while a volcano erupts in the background.

The main character, who appears to be channeling renowned Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, stands up and says, “In Cantera country, a volcano never dies,” as she picks up a glass of tequila and starts walking.

As she continues to note that a volcano only sleeps and never dies, the actual volcano in the background starts spewing lava and fiery boulders — which she easily sidesteps.

She then explains that the proof is found in the “mineral-rich black volcanic rock," as a stop-motion sequence of a growing agave plant presents a glowing bottle of Cantera Negra Tequila.

The shot pans to her riding a talented horse named Ozzy as she mixes her drink, after sharing the fact that the volcanic rock, a remnant of an “ancient fire," still enriches Cantero’s tequila today.

“Reminding us that we can always keep our flame alive,” she says as she grabs a bottle out of an agave plant and hoists it triumphantly into the air.

We then see her in a bar full of people, drinking Cantera Negra Tequila with the framed painting of her on the horse on the wall. The spot ends with a campaign card featuring three Cantera Negra bottles. 

Tequila is a classic drink that will never get old, ensuring that the product continues to be reinvented by newer brands.

One of these modern brands, Pantalones Organic Tequila, founded by Hollywood couple Matthew and Camila McConaughey, recently launched an inventive campaign that brought back "The Worm" dance move for National Earthworm Day.
