Build Brand Trust, Not Funnels: Key Findings

Trust over tactics wins because people buy based on how you make them feel, not the funnel you use.
Fix what matters first by identifying and solving the one weak link before adding complexity.
Being boldly human works when you speak your truth and build real micro-communities.

These days, people can spot a sales tactic from a mile away.

In fact, a report by Forbes states that 81% of consumers say they need to trust a brand before they’ll even think about buying.

This is why so many of the flashy hacks fall flat.

Lilach Bullock is a growth strategist and founder of Escape the Diet Prison, a coaching platform that helps women break free from toxic diet culture.

And she’s seen firsthand how trust and connection, not tactics, drive real business growth.

Quick listen: Why trust beats funnels for lasting growth — in under 2 minutes.

In an exclusive DesignRush interview, shares nine expert-backed tips that show why trust, clarity, and real human connection, not complex funnels, are what actually drive sustainable business growth.

Her motto? Forget the quick fixes. Sustainable businesses are built on trust, simplicity, and the kind of human connection people can actually feel.

1. Why Trust Beats Tactics

Many coaches and entrepreneurs fall into the trap of chasing the latest marketing hack, whether it’s a new Instagram trend, a 5-day challenge, or a flashy funnel.

But no tactic can replace messaging that truly connects with your audience.

Growth doesn’t come from the next shiny tool. It comes from trust and authenticity.

Audiences respond to human connection rather than polish. Bullock emphasizes this point:

The practical takeaway is to strip away the fluff and focus on clarity.

“Simplicity scales. Especially when you’re solo. My entire brand launch for ‘Escape the Diet Prison’ was built on real talk, bold storytelling, and showing up consistently, no complicated systems,” she says.

2. Identify and Fix the Single Weak Link

Entrepreneurs often try to do everything at once without addressing the underlying problem.

Bullock shows that growth often comes from fixing one misaligned element.

“One client was pouring energy into content, daily posts, stories, even reels, but wasn’t getting leads. The problem was that her bio and lead magnet were completely misaligned,” she explains.

The audience wasn’t responding because the messaging didn’t speak to their pain points, so no amount of content could generate leads.

After refining the messaging and creating a freebie that resonated, the client’s email list grew by 800 in six weeks, with no ad spend.

“Sometimes it’s not more,” Bullock stresses. “It’s fixing the one thing that’s broken.”

3. Use Raw Voice Memos to Stand Out

With so much AI-generated and polished content out there, it’s easy for messages to blend together.

Raw voice memos cut through that noise by letting people hear the real person behind the brand.

They create an immediate sense of connection, making audiences feel like they’re having a conversation, not just consuming content.

“Seriously. I send them as emails. I drop them into DMs. I’ve even used them in launches,” Bullock says. “There’s something so powerful about hearing the real you, not the polished, over-edited version. Your actual voice cuts through the noise like a hot knife through butter.”

Sharing your authentic voice in this way makes your message feel personal and relatable, and that’s what keeps people listening.

4. Launch First, Automate Later

It’s tempting to try to build every automation, sequence, and upsell before ever hitting “go.”

But overengineering often leads to paralysis; nothing gets launched, and momentum stalls.

Bullock advises starting manually and keeping the process human.

“I used to think I had to build the whole backend, the sequences, the upsells, the tags, the logic trees before I launched anything. Total paralysis. Now? I launch scrappy. Manually. Human first. And when something starts working, then I automate,” she explains.

By launching first and automating later, entrepreneurs can focus on what actually works, learn from real audience responses, and use technology to support momentum instead of trying to manufacture it.

5. Focus on Clarity, Emails, and Human Connection

When starting from scratch, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the things you could be doing. Bullock recommends concentrating on three essentials that actually drive traction.

First, clarity of message. If you can’t explain what you do and why it matters in one punchy sentence, everything else becomes noise.

“If you can’t explain what you do and why it matters in one punchy sentence, stop everything else,” she says.

Clear messaging ensures your audience instantly understands the value you provide.

Second, start collecting emails. One strong, focused freebie can build a meaningful list fast. This gives you a direct way to nurture leads and start building trust.

Finally, talk to humans daily. Comment, DM, or send voice notes — real connection matters more than audience size.

“You don’t need a big audience to create impact, you need real connection. Be so memorable and helpful that people want to tell others about you,” Bullock says.

Direct engagement makes your brand feel human and keeps your audience invested.

6. Speak Your Truth to Stand Out

Bold, honest messaging can cut through the noise and create real engagement.

Bullock discovered that taking risks and being completely transparent resonates more than polished, safe lines ever could.

“The day I wrote If diets fucking worked, you wouldn’t still be reading this, everything changed,” she recalls. “It wasn’t just bold, it was true. And people felt that.”

The lesson is clear: stop tiptoeing.

“When you stop tiptoeing and start telling the whole truth, people pay attention.”

Sharing your unfiltered perspective helps you attract the right audience and makes your content impossible to ignore.

7. Use Simple Tools to Stay Efficient

Even with a focus on simplicity, the right tools make running a business smoother and more effective.

Bullock relies on a handful of essential platforms that save time and keep operations organized.

  • Flodesk – for email marketing
  • Canva – to batch visuals and freebies quickly
  • ThriveCart – for sales pages and upsells
  • ScoreApp – to create conversational lead-gen quizzes
  • Notion – her “brain outside the brain” for launches, content, and workflows

Using tools strategically allows entrepreneurs to maintain clarity, consistency, and efficiency without overcomplicating processes.

8. Embrace Authenticity and Build Micro-Communities

Authenticity has become the most valuable differentiator. Audiences respond to people who are real, relatable, and bold.

“Your story, your scars, your specific rebellion — that’s what cuts through now,” Bullock says.

Micro-communities are increasingly driving influence and engagement.

Focusing on smaller, engaged groups allows entrepreneurs to build stronger relationships, foster loyalty, and create long-lasting impact.

9. Build Something That Lasts

Growth comes from trust, clarity, and real human connection.

Entrepreneurs who focus on what matters, show up authentically, and engage with their audience create communities that stick and momentum that keeps going.

Scaling Businesses FAQs

What’s the biggest mistake entrepreneurs make when growing online?

Focusing on tactics instead of connection. People respond to how a business makes them feel, not the funnel or hack you’re using.

How can entrepreneurs gain traction if they’re starting from scratch?

Focus on three essentials: clarity of message, a single strong freebie to collect emails, and daily human engagement through comments, DMs, or voice notes.

Do automation and funnels matter?

Yes, but only after you know what works. Launch manually first to test ideas and build momentum, then automate what actually drives results.

What’s an underrated tactic that delivers results?

Raw voice memos. They let audiences hear the real, unpolished voice behind the brand, cutting through AI-generated and overly polished content.

Why is authenticity so important for growth?

Bold, honest messaging attracts the right audience, creates trust, and builds long-term engagement. Micro-communities respond more to real connection than large, impersonal followings.
