Fortnite x 'Project Hail Mary' Collab: Key Findings
Fortnite players are taking a cosmic journey before "Project Hail Mary" even hits theaters.
Amazon MGM Studios has launched a first-of-its-kind Fortnite experience inspired by the sci-fi adventure film starring Ryan Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace and the alien Rocky.
Developed in partnership with user-generated content network Chartis, it makes use of Fortnite's titles and gameplay mechanics to bring the movie’s universe to life.

Players can explore custom-built maps in "Chained Together" and "Minigame Box PvP," with activities reflecting the movie’s core themes of curiosity, collaboration, and survival in space.
“We wanted to push the boundaries of what’s possible by connecting in-game communities with real-world events tied to the film,” Chartis Head of Commercial Aida Andersson said in a press release.
“The integration blurs the line between digital play and shared physical experiences, with every detail designed to make players feel as though they’ve stepped directly into the film’s story.”
The campaign reflects a co-branding approach in which entertainment properties and gaming platforms reinforce each other’s audiences and cultural reach.
Gameplay Mechanics Inspired by the Film
The experience includes four main gameplay modes.
The flagship Chained Together Spacewalk Integration challenges players to navigate a high-stakes vertical course inspired by Grace’s spacewalk, managing shifting gravity to stay on course.
Three additional minigames in Minigame Box PvP expand the universe:
- Chained Together Mini Variant: A condensed version of the main experience teaching cooperation, spatial awareness, and hazard navigation.
- Astrophage Prop Hunt: Players hide as the elusive Astrophage or hunt them down as scientists, using movement and teleportation to mirror the alien’s evasive abilities.
- Rocky’s Language Puzzle: Gamers decode harmonic alien sentences to progress through competitive problem-solving challenges.
The studio will also be hosting live Fortnite events tied to a private screening at the Los Angeles Griffith Observatory on March 16, bridging digital players and in-person moviegoers.
The integration is available worldwide in Fortnite through March 27.
For both the game and the upcoming film, it marks a notable effort in cross-platform storytelling.
Film Franchises Find New Life in Games
The campaign serves as a lesson in how to capitalize on a cinematic IP to craft interactive experiences for fans both old and new:
- Integrating a film’s universe into a popular game can build anticipation and deepen fan connection ahead of release.
- Layered minigames and puzzles reflecting a movie’s storylines increase player engagement and retention within digital environments.
- Brand partnerships gain depth when live events connect with gameplay, creating shared experiences across physical and digital spaces.
This latest effort reflects Amazon’s continued investment in expanding its entertainment portfolio.
The company spent about $22.4 billion on video and music content in 2025, according to its annual SEC filing.
Our Take: Can Films Live in Gaming Worlds?
Actually, Fortnite may be the perfect canvas for a film like "Project Hail Mary" to experiment with, letting users experience its world through existing gameplay dynamics.
Marvel Studios' "Fantastic Four" did something similar last year, letting players dress themselves in hero skins through its partnership with Fortnite.
We’ve always thought of movie marketing as billboards and trailers, but this most recent activation shows the power of immersion.
Connecting story, interactivity, and live events is a recipe for buzz, especially for the younger generations.
If more studios treated fans as co-adventurers rather than passive viewers, we’d see a whole new dimension of hype.
Similarly, Chappell Roan recently collaborated with Fortnite Festival Season 13, turning her tour visuals and music into an interactive in-game experience.
