Ace Hardware is extending its summer retail calendar with "Hometown Days."

The multi-week promotional effort is tied to major seasonal weekends including Memorial Day, Father's Day, and the Fourth of July.

The campaign combines limited-time discounts, loyalty rewards, sweepstakes, and in-store giveaways across several consumer categories.

The retailer is pairing product-specific offers with community-style store activations.

This includes:

  • Free item giveaways
  • Mystery app rewards
  • Fourth of July sweepstakes for an exclusive American Flag Weber Kettle Grill.

Mother's Day opened the campaign and now shifts toward backyard cooking, outdoor prep, and project-driven summer shopping behavior through July.

"Summer weekends are when people come together – whether it's grilling with family, tackling projects around the house or getting the backyard ready for friends," said Kim Lefko, CMO at Ace Hardware, in a press release.

The retail strategy gives the company more reasons to drive repeat store visits during key seasonal spending periods.

Holiday Deals Drive Repeat Visits

The "Hometown Days" calendar is structured around high-frequency shopping periods that already carry strong purchase intent.

Memorial Day promotions include discounts on grills, pellet fuel, power tools, lawn equipment, and barbecue accessories.

Father’s Day promotions center on bucket discounts, rewards multipliers, and grilling offers.

Fourth of July continues the backyard focus with charcoal, insect repellents, sauces, and outdoor cooking products tied to short-term flash pricing and rewards incentives.

Across all three periods, Ace Rewards members receive additional app-based perks.

"Hometown Days is all about helping our neighbors enjoy those moments with great savings, fun in-store events and the helpful service they count on from their local Ace," said Lefko.

The campaign also pushes convenience brand messaging through same-day delivery, 15-minute order pickup, and free grill assembly for qualifying purchases.

Ace's approach keeps the focus on practical summer routines, which may help the retailer maintain relevance beyond single-weekend discount spikes.

Seasonal Spending Fuels Store Traffic

Memorial Day through Fourth of July remains one of retail's most competitive promotional stretches.

RetailMeNot data suggests Memorial Day shopping intent is rising with planned participation climbing from 36% to 54% year over year.

Consumers' average spend fell from $289 to $86.

Grills and outdoor cooking gear ranked as the top Memorial Day shopping category at 28%, reinforcing Ace’s heavy focus on Weber, Traeger, and barbecue-related promotions.

The survey also found that 66% of consumers are waiting for Memorial Day discounts before making major purchases.

The "Hometown Days" marketing strategy combines outdoor living demand with home project spending and family gatherings.

  • Seasonal retail works best when products align with existing habits. Brands should connect deals to familiar holiday activities to increase purchase intent.
  • Loyalty incentives increase repeat engagement. Retailers should use app-based rewards and offers to encourage multiple visits across a campaign window.
  • Convenience now influences promotional performance. Stores should pair discounts with fast pickup and delivery options to reduce purchase friction.

This creates stronger reasons for customers to return throughout the season, increasing the value of tying holiday events to limited-time offers and urgency-driven messaging.

Our Take: Can Seasonal Retail Still Feel Local?

Yes, but only when the promotions connect to recognizable community behavior instead of generic discount messaging.

The store events, bucket giveaways, and rewards perks reinforce the idea that local hardware shopping still carries a neighborhood dimension.

We also think the timing matters.

Memorial Day and Fourth of July promotions often compete aggressively on price, so Ace benefits by attaching experiential elements like sweepstakes entries and in-store giveaways.

However, seasonal promotions lose impact when every retailer relies on the same discount mechanics year after year.

Long-term, campaigns like "Hometown Days" suggest physical retail still has an advantage when it creates reasons for shoppers to visit beyond pure transaction value.

Meanwhile, True Value became the "Official Sponsor of Grass" in its spring season campaign.

Hardware retailers need partners specializing in seasonal campaigns, loyalty strategy, and in-store activation.
