Wingstop and SOUR PATCH KIDS just launched candy-coated chicken wings that sound like a dare.

Wicked Punch arrives nationwide on October 27, and Club Wingstop members get four days of early access.

Created by Wingstop's Flavor Experts, it pairs a SOUR THEN SWEET redberry glaze with SOUR PATCH KIDS Bitz.

Customers can order it across all protein options through the Wingstop app or Wingstop.com.

"Candy on wings? We know exactly what you're thinking," said Michael Skipworth, Wingstop's president and CEO, in a press release.

"But no, seriously, it has no business being this good."

The launch arrives as Wingstop faces pressure on sales at existing restaurants.

Domestic same-store sales fell 7.5% in the second quarter of 2026, even as systemwide sales rose 5.3%.

Wicked Punch gives Wingstop a hook for Halloween week, the few days a year when a strange food combination sells itself.

Wingstop Makes Candy the Star of Halloween Wings

Wicked Punch pairs Wingstop's chicken with the signature SOUR THEN SWEET candy experience.

The redberry glaze delivers the flavor, while SOUR PATCH KIDS Bitz add a recognizable candy element.

The brand partnership also gives both companies a seasonal reason to reach each other's customers.

Wingstop gets a Halloween product with an unusual flavor profile, while SOUR PATCH KIDS enters a savory food category.

"This is the first taste of the SOUR PATCH KIDS 13 Days of Mischief program," said Lauryn McDonough, senior director of candy at Mondelēz International.

The campaign starts on October 19 with daily social prompts, so the wing drop carries the first product people can actually buy.

The limited run also gives the concept a fixed deadline.

Club members can order starting October 23. The flavor leaves menus on November 5, or while supplies last.

Wingstop uses a short Halloween window to make an unconventional flavor a reason to visit.

Mondelēz gets SOUR PATCH KIDS into a dinner order, which is the whole reason candy brands chase co-branding with restaurants.

7.5% Sales Decline Raises the Stakes for Flavor Innovation

Wingstop reported weaker sales at existing U.S. restaurants alongside growth across its expanding restaurant network.

Fewer guests walked in during the second quarter, and the 7.5% drop traces back to lower transaction volumes as consumer spending tightened.

Wingstop also cut its full-year outlook to a domestic same-store sales decline of 4% to 6%.

Systemwide sales rose 5.3% to $1.4 billion, supported by 102 net new restaurant openings.

Digital sales represented 71.6% of Wingstop's systemwide sales in the second quarter.

Wicked Punch has to do more than amuse people, since Wingstop needs the kind of visit that shows up in the same-store line.

The figures point to real commercial challenges. Brands can use these three insights to help combat them:

  • Give lapsed customers a dated reason to come back. A deadline converts mild curiosity into a trip someone takes this week.
  • Pair expansion with frequency offers. New units lift total sales while visit frequency decides whether each existing location holds its own.
  • Route every limited run through owned ordering channels. Promotions that live in the app or site show exactly who tried the item and who returned.

Unit growth hides a frequency problem for a while, which is why product innovation gets judged on repeat visits and not on launch-week chatter.

Our Take: Can Weird Flavors Win Back Lapsed Customers?

A candy glaze sells the first order, and the first order was never Wingstop's problem.

We think Wicked Punch does its job for Halloween week and leaves the traffic problem sitting exactly where it was in July.

The collabs that stick get folded into the ordering habit, the way that Taco Bell made Nacho Fries a return date that people wait for.

Wingstop's app already knows who ordered Wicked Punch and whether these same people came back in November.

We'd argue that the reorder rate is the only metric worth tracking on a limited-time flavor.

Candy on wings buys attention once, and November tells Wingstop whether to ever do it again.

If Wingstop can measure whether LTOs bring back lapsed customers or increase order frequency, it can assess their value retention.

It's the second chain this month to rent a candy or soda brand's Halloween recognition for a short menu drop.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe did the same with Coca-Cola, launching the Fanta Phantom smoothie with orange syrup and purple popping boba.
