Nike unveiled a new campaign to celebrate the history and career of tennis legend Rafael Nadal ahead of the athlete's retirement.

The athletic apparel and footwear giant launched a brand film, titled "Greatness. It Only Takes Everything," ahead of his final professional tournament, narrated by Nike Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus Phil Knight.

Becoming a Nike athlete at just 13 years old, Nadal made a name for himself in more than 1,500 official matches across over two decades, accumulating two Olympic gold medals and 22 Grand Slams (with a record 14 French Open victories in Paris).

The Spanish athlete also stood among the top 10 tennis players in the world for a record 17-plus consecutive years, spending over four years total as the best in the world.

In a press release, Knight praised Nadal, citing the ferocious competitive spirit that made him the perfect representative for Nike.

"The thing I remember most about Rafa is the expression on his face when he’d get down — he’d twist his mouth and his eyes would narrow, and you would say to yourself, ‘Oh, look out, he’s put his game face on.’ He was always fun to watch, and he was never out of a match,” Knight said.

Inspiring countless athletes and tennis fans all over the world to pick up the racket, Nadal's legacy of passion, energy, and resilience will go down in history.

As an homage to a titan of the sport taking his last bow, the ad rightfully uses brand storytelling to great effect, establishing an emotional thread that audiences can be inspired by.

Brands looking to create campaigns that coincide with impactful moments can utilize the same techniques.

Nadal's Impact

This campaign also highlights the player's signature Raging Bull symbol with Nike, symbolizing tennis greatness.

Aside from efforts in athletics and sportswear, he's established the Rafa Nadal Foundation, which aids young athletes in their journey to reach their full potential.

Meanwhile, the Rafa Nadal Academy offers top-notch education on the court and in the classrooms of the Rafa Nadal International School.

The Cost of Greatness

In the one-minute black-and-white short film, Nadal pulls a drag mat across a clay court, leveling the field as he reflects on his career.

The voice of Knight narrates a story of hard work and sacrifice as clips of Nadal playing tennis are shown in a quick montage.

Inspiring scenes from Nadal's greatest victories flash by as the spot emphasizes Nadal's blood, sweat, and tears.

The image of the drag mat is present throughout, kicking up dust, a reference to the player's status as the "King of Clay."

Eventually, the video comes to a close with a dramatic shot of Nadal walking into the distance, obscured by a cloud of dust.

Meanwhile, Nadal's contemporary, Roger Federer, starred in a tennis-themed spot for On back in July.
