LinkedIn's 'The Network That Works For You:' Key Findings
LinkedIn is shining the spotlight on the awkward side of work with its latest campaign, turning uncomfortable workplace moments into opportunities for growth.
Created with advertising giant McCann New York, "The Network that Works For You" uses humor to depict the experiences so many professionals face daily.
From tense welcome lunches to challenging team dynamics, the spots acknowledge that LinkedIn can’t fix every work challenge.
But what it can do is connect people to new careers, clients, or opportunities when it counts.
Lines like “LinkedIn doesn’t make your boss easier to deal with… but it does connect you to your next one” combine sharp wit with clear brand messaging.
Meanwhile, “LinkedIn Hiring Pro can help you find the ideal candidate,” followed by an awkward team lunch, shows that some moments are just outside the network’s control.
“We're telling a bigger, more unified story about the value of LinkedIn and consistently reinforcing that we’re the network that works for you,” said Jessica Jensen, CMO of LinkedIn.
“Whether you’re a member working to grow your career or a small business working to grow your business, we want to demonstrate that we understand the many layers of professional life and can help you along your journey.
How LinkedIn Works For You
The campaign is split into two focus areas, which are then divided into two spots.
"Grow Your Career" starts with a man scrolling through his LinkedIn, as his brother-in-law proposes to him a preposterous idea he calls the "swimming desk" that combines a pool and a work table at once.
The ad then shows how LinkedIn can introduce one to new roles, even while hospital patients still don't know that their robes close at the back.
Point being, no matter how absurd things can get in your workplace, LinkedIn has your back when it comes to excelling in your career.
On the other hand, "Grow Your Business" shows that while LinkedIn can help you with your business ventures, it cannot help you with many of your office woes.
These include the conference room your team has outgrown, or your officemate who ignorantly and noisily grinds his fruits in the office pantry.
Britt Nolan, CCO at McCann North America, explained the idea behind this genius angle.
“Most brands aren’t brave enough to take on any sort of negativity. But acknowledging what people are really going through is a powerful way to earn trust," he shared.
The campaign runs across multiple channels, including TV, online video, social media, display, OOH, and audio, combining short-form storytelling with shareable moments.
The approach allows LinkedIn to let its brand voice shine while engaging both individual professionals and businesses in relatable ways.
Lessons From LinkedIn’s Humorous Approach
The social platform's use of humor shows how to humanize professional services. Marketers, take note:
- Using comedy can highlight real work challenges while reinforcing your product's value without over-promising solutions.
- Multi-channel storytelling amplifies the reach of your campaign, ensuring comedic spots connect with both career and business audiences.
- Clear messaging paired with relatable moments strengthens trust in the platform and boosts engagement.
Last year, LinkedIn reported 1.2 billion members and 69 million companies globally, highlighting its reach and influence in professional networking.
Our Take: Can Humor Work in Professional Marketing?
I’ve always appreciated brands that aren’t afraid to admit they can’t solve everything.
LinkedIn’s new campaign is one of them, reminding me that honesty and humor can make even professional tools feel human.
Watching these spots, I found myself laughing at moments I’d secretly experienced, and realizing that the network really can help you move forward, even if it can’t fix your rowdy officemates.
To me, it shows that you can entertain without diluting your message.
