Dr. Martens launched another long-term brand idea.

"With Bouncing Soles" arrives as a global platform built around a phrase printed on the heel loop of its 1460 boot since 1960.

The launch brings together Chloë Sevigny, Jordan Stephens, Naomi Watanabe, LedByHer, and other brand wearers.

Each answers the same question, "What Makes Your Sole Bounce?"

Dr. Martens' Global Brand Creative Director Neil Cummings said the phrase now serves as "the creative thread."

"It's an invitation for people to celebrate creativity, individuality and the confidence to express who they are."

"What makes a bouncing sole?"

"In some ways, taking the time to ask is just as important as the answer," Cummings told RollingStone

The new platform includes a refreshed visual identity built around the three words that have been stitched onto every heel loop since 1960.

The interesting part is how familiar the formula looks.

Dr. Martens Keeps Rewriting Its Brand Story

"With Bouncing Soles" follows two major wearer-focused platforms and a sound campaign from the past seven years.

In 2019, We Are Social created "Tough as You" for Dr. Martens' Autumn/Winter campaign.

The work focused on four contributors sharing stories about resilience, with film, social, digital, and OOH brand assets.

In 2023, CALLING created "Made Strong," which the agency described as a new global brand platform.

It paired an anthem film and global OOH campaign with a documentary series featuring 14 people from the brand's community.

Dr. Martens has also explored sonic branding with IMAGINE in 2024.

"The Sound Of" episode translated the brand’s punk roots into gritty basslines, industrial beats, and guitar riffs.

Now almost two years later, "With Bouncing Soles" uses:

  • Another enduring phrase
  • Another community cast
  • Another question designed to let wearers define the brand

Dr. Martens is betting that a familiar construction can keep generating new stories without losing its brand identity.

19% Growth in Shoes is Quietly Taking More of the Business

Dr. Martens' latest platform arrives as its product mix changes, with shoes growing faster than boots in FY26.

Shoes generated 19% revenue growth in FY26 and boot revenue fell 8% in FY26, according to MarketScreener.

Newer product families such as Buzz and Lowell helped drive pairs growth.

Shoe revenue rose 32% in the Americas, outpacing the 19% global increase.

The numbers give "With Bouncing Soles" a commercial backdrop that sits underneath its cultural storytelling.

  • Product growth can change the job of brand marketing. Brands should connect heritage storytelling to growing categories to create purchase occasions.
  • Category pressure makes product variety more important. Brands should give consumers distinct reasons to buy to support demand across categories.
  • Regional growth can expose where demand is strongest. Brands should adapt product and marketing priorities to markets showing stronger demand.

This gives Dr. Martens room to make its footwear range feel more relevant to how people wear the brand now.

Our Take: Can Dr. Martens Keep One Idea Alive?

The 65-year-old phrase has an unusually useful asset behind it because consumers can find it on the product.

This gives the brand a physical link between campaign language and the shoes people already own.

But every new platform asks consumers to perform the same role with a different emotional vocabulary.

"Tough as You," "Made Strong," and "With Bouncing Soles" all ask wearers to define themselves through personal stories.

We think the next test is whether Dr. Martens can make the platform useful to product, retail, and culture.

And to do it without making every new campaign feel like another version of the same brief.

This gives Dr. Martens plenty of runway, but it also gives consumers plenty of time to decide whether the idea has staying power.

Similarly, McLaren's new wordmark shows how heritage brands can refresh their identity while keeping assets recognizable.

Brands planning a long-term identity platform need creative partners that can connect strategy and campaign execution.
