Burger King U.K. Drops Hilarious Ad Starring a Merman

Burger King U.K. just launched a bizarre yet comedic spot that showcases the ultimate "foodfillment," an amazing sandwich the burger chain can deliver to its customers.

Made together with creative agency BBH London and directed by Taso Alexander, the new campaign is the latest among a string of marketing efforts that shy away from the traditional advertising approach.

In the 30-second ad "Fishing," a father and his son go out into the sea on their boat for a fishing trip. After reeling in a catch, the dad congratulates his son, asking him, "It's the best feeling ever, isn't it?"

Enter a talking merman wearing a suit, butting into the conversation and taking the two by surprise.

"Is it though?" the merman asks.

"Is it really better than foodfillment, that warm fuzzy feeling of total food satisfaction, like finishing the last bite of the delicious Steakhouse Angus from Burger King?"

The father and son then magically hold a BK sandwich in their hands, before responding, "No, it's not."

Doubling down on the weirdness of the advert, the half-man-half-fish being proclaims he's a merman, to which the two think it "makes sense," even when I really don't think it does.

Burger King's 'That's Foodfillment' Ad Series

"Fishing" comes as part of the burger joint's wider "Foodfillment" campaign, which also stars merman actor Martial Batchamen Tchana, taking on different roles as the weird, uninvited guest.

In "Surprise Party," a woman comes home to a surprise birthday bash.

However, Tchana, this time as a granny, questions the celebrator's feelings when she called the surprise the "best feeling ever."

Granny Tchana touts Burger King's Classic Double Melt, and the woman and party-goers magically have the burger in their hands. 

In "First Kiss," a young couple celebrates a milestone in their lives with a first kiss on a football pitch.

Again, Tchana interrupts their special moment straight from the boy's backpack, questioning whether the kiss was better than the "foodfillment" that BK's Flame-Grilled Whopper offers. 

"He's right," the girl responds in agreement with Tchana, and the boy walks away with the mysterious man hanging from his backpack. 

Echoing a line from the three commercials, BBH Deputy Executive Creative Director Felipe Serradourada Guimaraes shared, "That warm fuzzy feeling of total creative satisfaction. That’s how these spots feel."
