Regal Cinemas Invites Viewers to Theaters in Weirdest Possible Way

Movie theater chain Regal Cinemas just launched three new 30-second spots that all play into one common theme - weirdness.

The campaign made by creative agency Quality Meats and director Andy Richter uses classic blockbuster character tropes to urge film streamers to watch movies in theaters instead.

In the first spot titled "Pool," a man named Richard is invited by a paranormal entity to come to see her movie. 

However, Richard tells the entity that he was hoping to catch her film at home.

"All your friends are talking about it right now," the entity responds, as they look to a group of kids by the pool imitating the entity's hair.

In true Exorcist fashion, the entity then twists her head and projectile vomits on Richard.

"Don't wait for the movies to come to you," the ad writes, as they invite viewers to "see the movies everyone's talking about" at Regal Cinemas.

The second spot entitled "BBQ" shows a man on the grill approached by an injured action hero to ask him to come see his film. 

Like Richard, the man tells the action star that he was waiting to see his action flick at home. "That hurts, man," the actor replies as blood spurts from his decapitated arm. "I put my blood, sweat, and tears into it."

The last spot "Ice Cream" shows a woman buying an ice cream cone from a truck, when a humanoid alien approaches her and says something in her native language.

"I don't understand," the woman responds. "Well your girl child and her friends clearly do," says the alien, teasing the woman for not seeing her movie.

In an interview with Muse, Quality Meats co-founder expressed his joy in working with Richter in bringing "over-the-top movie trope characters to life."

"Andy is a hilarious human being and a lot of fun to work with. He also had experience getting projectile vomited on by a possessed girl from Scary Movie 2," he shared.

Meanwhile, Regal Cinemas' creative director Rodney Griffin explained the message behind the commercials and the appeal of watching films in a cinema house.

"Movie theaters are gathering places where viewers collectively experience important events in pop culture. You’re fully immersed in a story projected on a big screen the way it was intended [...] If you wait to watch at home, you're missing out on being a part of that moment," Griffin explained.
